It’s the fi rst of its kind: a museum that off ers a humorous, frequently strange and occasionally prophetic insight into what the future may hold. Housed in one of the Barri Gòtic’s smart merchant houses, its 19thcentury stone archways are a curious contrast to what lies beneath. You shoot down a slide that connects the ground fl oor with the basement, and enter a world where fantasy meets reality. The “future” exhibit suggests that by 2131 a disposable brain-patch will be able to super-size your memory. By 2150, eggs 6Mean slice: Gruyère pizza will be sold in “single-unit blisters… due to the growing number of people living alone,” and between 2175 and 2178 smoking will have been been outlawed completely – violating this law will carry a hefty 10-year prison sentence – until the invention of a weird suckable device similar to a baby’s bottle paves the way for legalized smoking in public places. The real-life inventions range from the bizarre – a goatee shaver for that perfect arrangement of facial hair – to the practical: rubber “shoe raincoats” and hollow cubic cushions that allow stereo in both ears when lounging on the sofa. Perhaps the most inspired invention, however, is Pizza with attitude RESTAURANTS Just a couple of blocks from Venice’s Muscle Beach, Gjelina serves up a mean pizza in more ways than one. Not many places would have the stomach to deny Gordon Ramsay and a heavily pregnant Victoria Beckham changes to their salad. But with its bare concrete walls, communal tables and industrial decor – old school chairs, a bouquet of mismatched lightbulbs dangling from a meat hook as a chandelier – Gjelina is as bold as it is beautiful. Named for owner Fran Camaj’s mother, Gjelina always seems to be packed with passionate foodies and A-list celebrities here for head chef Travis Lett’s rustic small plates. But it’s the pizza that’s got us drool- THE HIT LIST of mirrors: MiBa showcases inventions that range from the obvious to the absurd the most basic. John’s Phone is the world’s simplest cell phone: it works everywhere, only makes phone calls, with no camera or other extras, and looks fabulous. Now that’s ingenious.
