Categorization Of PAsIn the year 1959, IUCN was given the task of ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a list of the World’sNational Park and equivalent reserves. It had def<strong>in</strong>ed ten categories earlier ofconservation areas represent<strong>in</strong>g different levels of protection (from strict naturereserves to multiple use areas) and vary<strong>in</strong>g degrees of local, regional and globalimportance; each category is designated to meet different objectives (IUCN 1990). Inthe year 1994, IUCN revised PA categories. At present PA are classified by IUCN(1994) under six broad management categories. These range from strict naturereserves managed primarily for research and or environmental monitor<strong>in</strong>g tomanaged resource PAs, established for long term protection and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance ofbiodiversity. As well as provid<strong>in</strong>g for the susta<strong>in</strong>able use of the natural products andservices to meet the community needs. In additions there are three InternationalConventions, namely world Heritage Convention (WHC), UNESCO man andbiosphere programme(MBP) and Ramsar convention and regional agreements such asASCEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) and the African Convention onthe Convention of nature and Natural Resources by which natural sites can beassigned as of global and regional importance. The Biosphere Reserves (BRs) are sitesof exceptional richness concern<strong>in</strong>g the diversity and <strong>in</strong>tegrity of biotic communities offlora and fauna of natural ecosystems. The primary use of the BR is for research,education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.
