SOFTWARE RADIO AS A SOLUTION TO CONVENTIONALANALOG RADIOSA S<strong>of</strong>tware Radio <strong>in</strong> contrast to a traditional Radioruns on a generic hardware platform to perform all themodulation/demodulation, frequency selection, filter<strong>in</strong>getc <strong>in</strong> digital doma<strong>in</strong> as also expla<strong>in</strong>ed above <strong>in</strong> theexample. It can perform role <strong>of</strong> a cordless phone, cellphone, <strong>in</strong>ternet access tool, a GPS receiver etc. all <strong>in</strong> one.This is possible by chang<strong>in</strong>g the s<strong>of</strong>tware used forprocess<strong>in</strong>g. Hence, there is no limitation <strong>of</strong> any particularfrequency range, modulation type, and output power <strong>in</strong> aS<strong>of</strong>tware Radio. All these flexibilities <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware radio<strong>of</strong>fer advantages which can be broadly classified as:A. Frequency-AgileThe s<strong>of</strong>tware programmable process<strong>in</strong>g allows it tooperate <strong>in</strong> the entire radio waves frequency bands.B. Easy to plug n playIt is a radio <strong>in</strong>to which multiple contractors could plugparts and s<strong>of</strong>tware.C. Global MobilityIt caters to the model as it is flexible to support most <strong>of</strong>the communications standards like CDMA, GSM, IS-136etc.D. Inter-operabilityIt can be made to <strong>in</strong>ter-operate with different wirelessprotocols, <strong>in</strong>corporate new services, and upgrade to newstandards etc by simply download<strong>in</strong>g a new program (or anewer version <strong>of</strong> the s<strong>of</strong>tware) or by change <strong>of</strong> selectionfrom the user <strong>in</strong>terface.E. Compact and Power EfficientDue to reduced number <strong>of</strong> components used <strong>in</strong>S<strong>of</strong>tware Radio, its size is reduced result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> ease <strong>of</strong>manufactur<strong>in</strong>g. Also less hardware results <strong>in</strong> less powerconsumption.(4)F. APPLICATIONS OF SOFTWARE RADIOThe ultimate goal <strong>of</strong> S<strong>of</strong>tware Radio is to provide as<strong>in</strong>gle radio trans-receiver which can play the roles <strong>of</strong>cordless telephone, cell phone, wireless fax, wireless e-mail system, pager, wireless videoconferenc<strong>in</strong>g unit,wireless <strong>Web</strong> browser, Global Position<strong>in</strong>g System (GPS)unit, and other functions still <strong>in</strong> the realm <strong>of</strong> sciencefiction, operable from any location on the surface <strong>of</strong> theearth, and perhaps <strong>in</strong> space as well. Few <strong>of</strong> theapplications <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware Radio has been coveredhenceforth and shows the variety <strong>of</strong> functionality towhich it can cater to.A. Pacemakers and Implantable Cardiac DefibrillatorsWirelessly reprogrammable and implantable medicaldevices (IMDs) such as pacemakers, implantablecardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), neurostimulators, andimplantable drug pumps use embedded computers andradios to monitor chronic disorders and treat patients withautomatic therapies. For <strong>in</strong>stance, an ICD that senses arapid heartbeat can adm<strong>in</strong>ister an electrical shock alsoknown as the s<strong>of</strong>tware radio attacks to restore a normalheart rhythm, then later reports this event to a health carepractitioner who uses a commercial device programmerwith wireless capabilities to extract data from the ICD ormodify its sett<strong>in</strong>gs without surgery. Cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials haveshown that these devices significantly improve survivalrates <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> populations. [4]B. Smart sensorsS<strong>of</strong>tware Radios can be implemented as smart sensorsto determ<strong>in</strong>e the amount <strong>of</strong> various particles present <strong>in</strong>atmosphere, hence useful for pollution check, weatherforecast etc. When used as Bio-sensor with configurables<strong>of</strong>tware, it can be used <strong>in</strong> study <strong>of</strong> complex anatomy.C. One Cell phone for many standardsIt is highly <strong>in</strong>convenient for a regular <strong>in</strong>ter countrytraveler to change his mobile connection forcommunication due to network issues. For example,3GPP UMTS is popular <strong>in</strong> European nations, whileC/TDMA standards are widely used across North andSouth America. So, every time one travels through acountry he has to have the country specific cellularphone. But with the com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> S<strong>of</strong>tware radio, it can be ath<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> past as the S<strong>of</strong>tware Radio can adapt to change <strong>in</strong>the local air <strong>in</strong>terface by a simple s<strong>of</strong>tware change. Allthe base stations and term<strong>in</strong>als us<strong>in</strong>g S<strong>of</strong>tware Radioarchitecture can support multiple air <strong>in</strong>terfaces dur<strong>in</strong>gperiods <strong>of</strong> transition and be easily upgraded.D.
