MARÍA MARTÍNEZ LIROLA, UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE, SPAINWRITING PROFICIENCY SKILLS IN EXPOSITION ESSAY WRITING IN MULTILINGUALENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSROOMSThe study reported in this paper focuses on the use of Genre Theory in multilingualclassrooms at University level as an appropriate framework for English L2 writing.Our students’ mother tongue were Spanish, Valencian, French, Italian, German andRumanian.Genre Theory was applied to increase university students’ literacy skills through thestudy of different text types and their specific grammatical features. As an adequateevaluation process had to be implemented, the computer programme Markin’©developed by Martin Holmes (1996-2002) was used to correct a corpus of 40expositions written in English by university Spanish students on the EnglishLanguage IV course at the University of Alicante (Spain). Markin’© was used toclassify and monitor the frequency of the types of errors corrected.This presentation will present and illustrate with examples how we have used theGenre Theory so that university students could receive help and feedback duringthe writing process, see models of good writing and analyse textual structure,taking into consideration the cultural and social context of the texts, and couldobserve how grammatical features cluster in particular text types.This study will show that the combination of NTIC, and the Theory of Genre helpedstudents to increase their level of literacy. MARÍA MARTÍNEZ LIROLA, UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE, SPAINMAIN VISUAL CHOICES IN THE REPRESENTATION OF IMMIGRANTS IN THE SPANISHPRESS: EXPLORING VISUAL DYSPHEMISMSThe goal in this paper is to observe the treatment of immigration in the currentSpanish press via the analysis of the visual choices used in the journalisticrepresentation of immigration in a representative sample of multimodal textspublished in 2009 in two journals from Alicante (Información and La Verdad), one ofthe provinces with a highest percentage of immigrants in Spain. With this in mind,taking Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough 1992; van Dijk 2000) and VisualGrammar (Kress and van Leeuwen 2006) as theoretical paradigms, this presentationwill explore the main ways in which images are manipulated in order to createvisual dysphemisms. Consequently, the negative representation of immigrants willallow as to talk about ‘visual racism’ (Van Leeuwen 2000) and its consequences forthe audience perception of immigrants.The findings obtained provide evidence for the fact that, in the majority of the textsanalysed, a considerable number of visual aspects do not contribute to a positiverepresentation of immigrants and tend to provoke, whether consciously or not, theimmigrants’ discrimination.ReferencesFairclough, Norman. 1992.
