APPRAISAL THEORY, CRITICALDISCOURSE ANALYSIS AND THE GRAMMAR OF DISCOURSE REPRESENTATIONDifferently from research on the translation of point of view (who sees), this paperconsiders the translation of voice (who speaks) in fiction and its main aim is topresent and discuss a system of categories of discourse representation asexpressive of interpersonal meaning in narrator-character-narratee relations butalso to some extent applicable to quoter-quotee-addressee relations in othertranslated text types. Within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies(Toury 1995), and importing from Narrative Theory (Leech and Short 1981;Chatman 1978, 1990; Marnette 1998; Rosier 1990), Critical Discourse Analysis(Fairclough 1995; Caldas-Coulthard 1994) and Appraisal Theory (White 2001;Martin and White 2005), this paper presents work-in-progress for the developmentof a system of categories for the analysis of translational shifts in narratorcharacter-narrateerelations in translated fiction. Such a system is devised in orderto develop a semi-automatic methodology for a comparative quantitative analysisof electronic source and target texts organized in a parallel corpus; and to helpdescribe the way interlingual translation may transform the narrator/quoter profilein terms of intertextual/dialogic positioning.ReferencesCaldas-Coulthard, C.
