ColloquiaCLAIRE ACEVEDO, INTERNATIONAL LITERACY CONSULTANT, UNITED KINGDOMAPPLICATIONS OF SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS IN EDUCATION CONTEXTSAROUND THE WORLD: SNAPSHOTS FROM ARGENTINA, AUSTRALIA, PORTUGALAND SWEDENThis is one of two colloquia on different applications of SFL in a variety of educationcontexts around the world. Together they give a broad picture of the many ways SFLand Genre pe<strong>da</strong>gogy are currently being taken up in a range of education settingsbut are not <strong>de</strong>signed to be sequential. Participants are encouraged to chooseaccording to areas of interest.This colloquium will showcase different aspects and innovations of genre-basedliteracy pe<strong>da</strong>gogy in various educational contexts around the world. Genre-basedpe<strong>da</strong>gogy is informed by SFL and genre and register theory (Martin & Rose 2008)and by research on language learning in the home (Halli<strong>da</strong>y 1975, Painter 1986).Over three <strong>de</strong>ca<strong>de</strong>s, a series of large-scale action research projects have produced apowerful set of strategies for explicitly teaching reading and writing, and expandingknowledge about language in education (Rose 2008).Alzira Tavares from Portugal will report on the use of a Genre framework foranalysis of the performance of Portuguese learners on reading items in theProgramme for International Stu<strong>de</strong>nt Assessment (PISA). She will explain how a gapwas i<strong>de</strong>ntified between the Genres taught in school and the Genres and tasksrequired by PISA which may explain how Portuguese stu<strong>de</strong>nts appear to achievepoorly in this international comparison of literacy achievement.Estela Moyano from Argentina will <strong>de</strong>scribe the use of a reorganisation of theGenre teaching and learning cycle in her work in a teacher training project an<strong>de</strong>xplain how it empowered stu<strong>de</strong>nts to construct discipline knowledge while<strong>de</strong>veloping as autonomous rea<strong>de</strong>rs and writers in Spanish.Claire Acevedo, originally from Australia and now working in Europe, will outlinethe key features of Reading to Learn and explain how the teacher <strong>de</strong>velopmentprogram enables teachers to accelerate stu<strong>de</strong>nt literacy achievement usingexamples from successful projects in Australia and Swe<strong>de</strong>n.Ann-Christin Lövstedt from Swe<strong>de</strong>n will share her experience of leading teachers inStockholm to implement the Reading to Learn pe<strong>da</strong>gogy to accelerate the literacy<strong>de</strong>velopment of second language learners.
