IRAN FERREIRA DE MELO, UNIVERSIDADE DE SÃO PAULO, BRAZILANALYSIS OF THE TRANSITIVITY AS STUDY ABOUT REPRESENTATION OF LGBTACTIVISM IN THE BRAZILIAN PRESSThe ideational function of the language, responsible for representing the reality, can be investigated, according to Halliday & Matthiessen (2004), through theanalysis of the transitivity, lexicogrammatical system formed by participants(nominal groups), processes (verbs) and circumstances (adverbs ). The semanticrelation between these elements and the function that they play in the productionof social meaning are able to construct representations about any individuals andgroups. Leaving, therefore, the study on this system as a tool to show the publicimages produced on minority social groups, we’ll present an investigation oftransitivity in texts of the Folha de Sao Paulo (Brazil) – 1997 to 2010 – about thesocial activism of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, components of tho calledLGBT movement. This is a work that aims to understand how this group historicallyexcluded from their social rights are represented in their practice of politicalactivism in the Brazilian newspaper of largest nationwide circulation. We’ll expose, for this, the partial conclusion of a doctoral research in development at theUniversity of São Paulo about social and discursive representation of LGBT in thepress Brazilian, recognizing, thus, the role of the transitivity as an effectivemechanism of building and unveiling of ideologies to analysis of public discourseand journalism.PAPER SESSION 8A - ROOM 1 - THURSDAY, 28 JULYISFC38 Book of Abstracts Page 87 Lisbon, July 2011
