MOTOKI SANO, NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICSRECONSTRUCTING ENGLISH SYSTEM OF ATTITUDE FOR THE APPLICATION TO JA-PANESE: AN EXPLORATION FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A JAPANESE DICTIONARYOF APPRAISALThis paper describes the system of Japanese ATTITUDE, which was developed by reconstructingthe English system of ATTITUDE based on the analysis of the evaluativeexpressions appeared in the IWANAMI Japanese Dictionary, the Balanced Corpus ofContemporary Written Japanese, and the Japanese Database of Individual PatientExperiences. The Japanese system highlights i) the activeness and passiveness ofthe expressions for affect, which can be identified, for instance, in the semantic differencebetween “konomu” (favor) and “tanoshimu” (enjoy), and ii) the relativity, affectivity and independence of the expression for judgement and appreciation, asit can be seen in the semantic difference among the words “mezurashii” (rare),“yuukoo” (effective) and “kashikoi” (smart). In addition, the paper also introducesthe Japanese Dictionary of Appraisal, which classifies about 10,000 attitudinal expressionsaccording to the Japanese system. The employment of the dictionary forsentiment analysis enables revealing the diversification of evaluation as a social behaviour, which cannot be captured by a mere classification of evaluative polarity.PAPER SESSION 4D - ROOM 4 - TUESDAY, 26 JULYISFC38 Book of Abstracts Page 151 Lisbon, July 2011
