TERESA CASTINEIRA, BENEMÉRITA UNIVERSIDAD AUTÓNOMA DE PUEBLASELF-REPRESENTATION OF TRAUMA: AN APPRAISAL, MULTIMODAL ANALYSISThis in-progress data-driven study examines the various semiotic resources ofdiscourse (language, pictures, colors, and symbols among other) utilized by EFLlearners who wrote about traumatic experiences such as rape, racism, and loss intheir autobiographies. Various approaches are used in the analysis of theseautobiographies such as genre analysis (Anderson, 2011), multimodality (Kress &van Leeuwen, 2005; Jones & Ventola, 2008), and appraisal (Martin & White, 2005).The autobiographies were written at the end of the 6 th . Level English course (B2according to the CEFr.) by students who are majoring in English Language Teachingin a public university in Mexico. 10 autobiographies were selected, five written byfemales, and five by males. The writers of these autobiographies express their feelings of despair, frustration, and pain with different linguistic resources, which were categorized under the threesystems of appraisal: engagement, attitude and graduation. Subsequently, theseresources were categorized under the various appraisal sub-systems. Extractsexemplifying these categorizations will be displayed. Besides language, writers useddifferent semiotic modes such as family pictures and paper with subliminalmessages to express other feelings. Samples of these resources will be presented.Due to the limited amount of data, generalizations cannot be drawn, however, wemay conclude that by expressing their feelings through different semiotic modes, these autobiographies may represent liberating tools for these particular EFLlearners.PAPER SESSION 1E, ROOM 5 - MONDAY 25 JULYISFC38 Book of Abstracts Page 190 Lisbon, July 2011
