LUCIANA DE OLIVEIRA, PURDUE UNIVERSITYAPPLICATIONS OF SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS IN EDUCATION CONTEXTSAROUND THE WORLD: SNAPSHOTS FROM AUSTRALIA, BRAZIL, HONG KONG ANDTHE UNITED STATESThis is one of two colloquia on different applications of SFL in a variety of educationcontexts around the world. Together they give a broad picture of the many ways SFLand Genre pe<strong>da</strong>gogy are currently being taken up in a range of education settingsbut are not <strong>de</strong>signed to be sequential. Participants are encouraged to chooseaccording to areas of interest.This colloquium will showcase different aspects and innovations of SFL-informedliteracy frameworks in various educational contexts around the world. The literacyframeworks <strong>de</strong>scribed are groun<strong>de</strong>d in genre-based pe<strong>da</strong>gogy (Martin & Rose,2008) and a<strong>da</strong>ptations of analysis of visual structures (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006).Presenters discuss different projects <strong>de</strong>veloped in Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, andthe United States to show how SFL concepts and i<strong>de</strong>as have been taken up an<strong>da</strong><strong>da</strong>pted to different contexts and populations.Luciana <strong>de</strong> Oliveira from the United States will report on a case study of a 4 th gra<strong>de</strong>teacher who constructed five SFL-based science lessons and applied them in herclassroom. She will map out a framework for working with general educationteachers, based on work on the teaching/learning cycle (Martin & Rose, 2005;Rothery, 1994) and the notion of scaffolding (Hammond, 2001) applied to teachereducation.Danielle Almei<strong>da</strong> and Veralucia Guimarães <strong>de</strong> Souza from Brazil will <strong>de</strong>scribe twoprojects that addressed visual literacy with stu<strong>de</strong>nts learning English as a ForeignLanguage. They will propose a multimo<strong>da</strong>l pe<strong>da</strong>gogical framework to be applied inthe reading of visual structures focusing on the linguistic, situational and socioculturaldimensions of images.Sally Humphrey and Shoshana Dreyfus from Australia will present a 3x3 framework<strong>de</strong>veloped as a ‘semiotic toolkit’ to apprentice tutors of tertiary literacy into the SFLresources most relevant to aca<strong>de</strong>mic writing. Using this framework and afunctionally-oriented metalanguage, they <strong>de</strong>monstrate ways in which they havesupported stu<strong>de</strong>nts’ writing <strong>de</strong>velopment in Australia and Hong Kong.ReferencesHammond, J.
