Foxit PhantomPDFUser ManualChapter 11 – Digital Signatures (Available inStandard and Business Only)A digital signature acts as a traditional handwritten signature that can be used to authenticatethe identity of a user as well as the document content. It stores information about the signeralong with the date, time, and state of the document when it was signed.Digital SignaturesAbout Digital IDDigital ID is the identity of a person/organization, which contains your name, Email address, aserial number, an expiration date, and the name of the company. A digital ID contains two keys,one is a public key (certificate) that is used to encrypt or lock data, and the other is a private keythat is used to decrypt or unlock data that is encrypted.You can distribute your certificate that contains the public key and other identifying informationto those people who need to use it to verify your identity, validate your signature, or encrypt adocument for you. Only your private key can unlock information that was encrypted using yourcertificate, so make sure to store your digital ID in a safe place.You can only obtain a digital ID from a trusted third-party provider called a Certificate Authority(CA). Digital IDs are usually protected by password; you can store it on computer in PKCS#12 fileformat, or in the Windows Certificate Store.Foxit will support the ability to create a self-signed digital ID in the next major version. Untilthen, please use another source to create a self-signed digital ID.Placing a signatureBefore you sign a document, you need to draw a signature field where the signature is placed,get a digital ID, and create the signature look for your signature.1. Choose Secure > Place Signature.2. Press and hold the mouse button down, and drag to draw a signature filed for your signature,or double-click some area of page where you want the signature to appear.3. In Sign Document dialog box, choose a digital ID from drop-down menu, or click Browse andspecify a PKCS12 Certificate file with .cer extension. If you don’t find the specified digital ID,you need to get a certificate from the third-party provider or create a self-signed digital ID.4. Choose an appearance type from menu. There are two types to choose, one is Standard160

You can view signature look immediately in Signature Preview panel.5. Click OK.Sign Document Dialog BoxNote: you can move or resize a signature after placing it on document, so be sure to thesignature location and size before signing document.Creating signature appearanceYou can set the appearance of your digital signature by selecting different options in SignDocument dialog box. For example, a signature can include an image of your handwrittensignature, a company logo, or a photo, date and so on. Furthermore you can create dynamicsignature appearance to user for different purpose. A signature appearance also includesinformation that helps others verify your signature, such as reason for signing, contactinformation, and more.161
