<strong>General</strong> <strong>Orders</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Turks</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Caicos</strong> Isl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Service</strong> - 1998 Edition8.2.3 Medical certificates covering sickness absence should be retained by <strong>the</strong> Responsible Officersfor record keeping purposes <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Responsible Officer should notify <strong>the</strong> Chief Secretary <strong>of</strong> allsickness absences as <strong>the</strong>y occur, for central record keeping purposes, using <strong>the</strong> form given in AppendixE.8.2.4 The Chief Secretary may require at any time for an Officer to be examined by <strong>the</strong> ChiefMedical Officer in respect <strong>of</strong> that Officer's illness or injury <strong>and</strong> his or her ability to satisfactorilyperform his or her normal duties.8.2.5 Sick leave in excess <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> limits set out in <strong>the</strong>se <strong>Orders</strong> will only be Wmnted by <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong>discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chief Secretary acting upon <strong>the</strong> advice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chief Medical Officer.8.2.6 An Officer who is established <strong>and</strong> on Pensionable terms may be granted sick leave on fullsalary up to a maximum period <strong>of</strong> six months in any period <strong>of</strong> twelve months. Thereafter if necessary<strong>the</strong> entitlement is for a fur<strong>the</strong>r six months in that same twelve month period on half salary. Exceptwhere an Officer has accumulated leave in which case this leave must be taken <strong>and</strong> exhausted before<strong>the</strong> entitlement to half pay commences. Sick leave beyond an aggregate <strong>of</strong> twelve months in any period<strong>of</strong> four years or less will be without salary <strong>and</strong> will not count as service for salary increments orpension, but in this event Medical Board procedures should be invoked.8.2.7 Officers appointed on non-Pensionable terms or who are not established may be granted sickleave on full salary up to a maximum period <strong>of</strong> three months during any period <strong>of</strong> twelve months. Anyextension <strong>of</strong> sick leave will be without salary <strong>and</strong> will not count as service for salary increments orgratuity.8.2.8 An Officer who has been on sick leave for a continuous period <strong>of</strong> three months, or who hasbeen sporadically absent through sickness for a total period <strong>of</strong> three months in any twelve monthperiod will, at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chief Secretary, be required to submit for an examination orrepeated examination by a Medical Board appointed by <strong>the</strong> Chief Medical Officer.8.2.9 If a Medical Board advises that it is unlikely that an Officer will be likely to return to duty in<strong>the</strong> foreseeable future, or regain <strong>and</strong> maintain more regular pattern <strong>of</strong> attendance at work withsatisfactory performance, <strong>the</strong> Chief Secretary will make a decision upon <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Medical Board as to <strong>the</strong> Officer's continuing suitability for employment. If <strong>the</strong> Chief Secretary is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>opinion that <strong>the</strong> Appointment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Officer should be terminated she shall notify <strong>the</strong> Commissionaccordingly <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> procedure described in Part III <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Service</strong> (Appointment, Removal <strong>and</strong>Discipline <strong>of</strong> <strong>Public</strong> Officers) Rules contained in <strong>the</strong> Schedule to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Service</strong> (Delegation <strong>of</strong>Powers) Regulations 1997 shall apply8.2.10 An Officer must seek qualified medical advice when he or she is unwell or when instructed todo so by his or her Responsible Officer. If he or she fails to do so or fails to comply with <strong>the</strong> medicaladvice given he or she may render himself or herself liable to disciplinary action.8.2.11 If for any reason it is decided that an Officer should be examined by a Medical Board, he or shemust present himself or herself at <strong>the</strong> place <strong>and</strong> time instructed <strong>and</strong> if <strong>the</strong>y fail to do so will renderhimself or herself liable for disciplinary action.8.2.12 The Governor, in his discretion, may grant sick leave on full pay in addition to a period <strong>of</strong> sickleave on full pay provided under <strong>the</strong>se <strong>Orders</strong> where, in his opinion, any Officer is suffering from35
