DCPs must ensure crew familiarity with the operation of flightmanagement and guidance systems in all phases of flight as appropriate tothe airplane type.Each crew to confirm adequate knowledge, ability and discipline in the useof the FMS system must demonstrate sufficient procedures, appropriate tothe airplane type. On initial proficiency checks each pilot shall demonstrateFMS programming for departure, en-route, arrival, approach, alternate,change of destination and holding procedures. In addition, each crew shalldemonstrate programming for lateral offset and altitude crossing restrictionmaneuvers. During recurrent proficiency checks, crews must demonstratesatisfactory knowledge of sufficient FMS procedures to complete the checkride scenario.Some common errors that may be observed and affect the rating of thesequence are:a) not familiar with company SOPs regarding the use of the FMS;b) multiple programming errors;c) excessive time required to program the intended flight;d) incorrect or incomplete data entries;e) unable to program a procedure or sequence due to lack of knowledge ofthe FMS;1 st Edition Page 45 of 80 June, 2009f) unable to recover a portion of the flight plan if inadvertently erased;g) failure to recognize and take corrective action when programmed FMSnavigation is not satisfactory or not in accordance with clearance;h) one crew member requires prompting or help from the other crewmember in order to program FMS; ori) not checking accuracy of entered data.Auto Flight Systems/Flight Mode AwarenessFor all highly automated airplanes, given the sometimes-subtle modechanges that can occur with regard to flight path management and the autothrottlesystem, disciplined monitoring and crew coordination associatedwith flight mode indications is essential to safe operations.
