Box 5: Nairucu Arts : promot<strong>in</strong>g cooperation<br />
between Europe and Mozambique<br />
The Nairucu-Arts Art Craft Centre is located <strong>in</strong> Rapale,<br />
Nampula and has been <strong>in</strong>augurated by <strong>the</strong> Chief<br />
Adm<strong>in</strong>istrator of Rapale <strong>in</strong> 2009. Art and Craft objects of<br />
high quality <strong>for</strong> national and <strong>in</strong>ternational markets are<br />
produced and sold to susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> long term development<br />
activities of <strong>the</strong> Centre. To optimize <strong>the</strong> work <strong>the</strong> persons<br />
selected to work and specialized <strong>the</strong>re are provided with a<br />
meal and a modest fellowship <strong>for</strong> a period of 3 years,<br />
renewable <strong>for</strong> a maximum of ano<strong>the</strong>r 2 years to allow <strong>the</strong>m<br />
to exploit fully <strong>the</strong>ir creativity. The activities will be<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Centre to become self-sufficient. The aim<br />
is to build cultural heritage, to bridge culture, creative<br />
economy and education and to <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> talent and<br />
<strong>in</strong>novation.<br />
Sculptures and pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs from <strong>the</strong> Nairucu-Arts Centre - A Better Future Through Art - were<br />
exhibited to give a good overview of <strong>the</strong> current artistic production from <strong>the</strong> Centre, show<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Makonde Art from Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Mozambique. This event was opened by His Excellency Armando<br />
Emilio Guebuza, <strong>the</strong> President of <strong>the</strong> Republic of Mozambique. Dur<strong>in</strong>g a guided tour,<br />
representatives of Nairucu-Arts presented: Posters illustrat<strong>in</strong>g Mozambique history, geography<br />
and its natural attractions, <strong>the</strong> achievements realized by <strong>the</strong> country <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of education and<br />
economic development, <strong>the</strong> Makonde art, <strong>the</strong> Nairucu-Arts Centre and its artists. The works<br />
<strong>in</strong>cluded 22 Blackwood Sculptures, 2 Terracotta Sculptures and 7 Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
The President of Cultural Activities Committee of <strong>the</strong> United Nation Office at Geneva<br />
<strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>the</strong> speeches given by <strong>the</strong> Director-General of <strong>the</strong> United Nations Office at Geneva<br />
and <strong>the</strong> President of Mozambique. The exhibit was under <strong>the</strong> high patronage of Sergei<br />
Ordzhonikidze, Director-General of <strong>the</strong> United Nations Office at Geneva and Frances Rodrigues,<br />
Ambassador, Permanent Representative of <strong>the</strong> Republic of Mozambique to <strong>the</strong> United Nations<br />
Office and o<strong>the</strong>r International Organizations <strong>in</strong> Geneva and counted with <strong>the</strong> support of <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Creative</strong> Economy Programme of UNCTAD.<br />
