HDRC<strong>Socio</strong>-<strong>economic</strong> <strong>Baseline</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chittagong</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Tracts</strong>CHAPTER XIHOUSEHOLD INCOME8411.1 IntroductionThe survey has gathered information on source-wise household income earned by allhousehold members, male or female. A comprehensive list <strong>of</strong> household income sources hasbeen prepared for administering during the survey keeping the provision <strong>of</strong> inclusion <strong>of</strong>missing (if any) source applicable for any <strong>of</strong> the sample households during the data collectionprocess. Thus, exhaustive information on annual household gross income along with cost <strong>of</strong>generating the same has been collected for each <strong>of</strong> the sample household. It is to note that anyamount which is greater than zero has been documented as income against any sourcementioned by the respondent. The annual net household income reported in theaccompanying chapter as household income has been estimated by subtracting the cost <strong>of</strong>income generation from the gross income by sources. The aggregated net income <strong>of</strong> allapplicable sources for each household is considered as household annual net income for theparticular household. The survey has also generated women’s share in household’s netincome by sources. Discussions on the sources <strong>of</strong> income in rural CHT is presented in section11.2, the analysis <strong>of</strong> household income scenario is made in section 11.3, while section 11.4analyses the contribution <strong>of</strong> women members in household income.11.2 Income SourcesThe survey has revealed that there are altogether 35 different types <strong>of</strong> income sourcesapplicable for rural households in CHT. Not all the sources are applicable for each <strong>of</strong> thehouseholds; moreover some <strong>of</strong> the sources are limited among specific ethnic communities.The income sources are grouped into five broad categories (Figure 11.1): (i) agriculturerelated (10 sources), (ii) business (7 sources), (iii) Wages (non-farm) and salaried (3 sources),(iv) traditional for rural CHT (5 sources), and (v) others (10 sources).Figure 11.1: Classification <strong>of</strong> Household Income Sources in Rural CHTHousehold Income SourcesAgriculturerelatedBusinessWages & salariedempowermentTraditionalOthers1.
