HDRC<strong>Socio</strong>-<strong>economic</strong> <strong>Baseline</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chittagong</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Tracts</strong>212.4 Variables and IndicatorsThe current baseline survey was designed to provide a comprehensive account <strong>of</strong> socio<strong>economic</strong>characteristics <strong>of</strong> the CHT population pertaining to UNDP-CHTDF’s currentprogram interventions. The measurable areas/objects and broader categories <strong>of</strong> variablesinclude: (a) demographic, (b) <strong>economic</strong> (income, consumption, savings, asset ownership), (c)social and cultural (literacy, health, water and sanitation, gender, women empowerment,VAW), (d) access to infrastructure facilities and services (power, energy and communicationincluding telecommunication), and (e) issues related to confidence building and peace treaty.It is to note that in devising variables and indicators, various pertinent documents <strong>of</strong> UNDP,the Bangladesh MDG Progress Report 2004, and Bangladesh Common Country Assessment2004 had been carefully consulted. A rigorous discussion was held at the inception workshopin Rangamati, and a number <strong>of</strong> brainstorming sessions were conducted with both indigenousand Bangalee community peoples and their leaders, knowledgeable people <strong>of</strong> CHT, andrelevant UNDP <strong>of</strong>ficials to finalize variables, indicators and data collection techniques. It wasenvisaged that as the outputs <strong>of</strong> the baseline survey, the estimates would be produced aimingat the needs to provide measurable impacts <strong>of</strong> the interventions on households andindividuals on the basis <strong>of</strong> precise socio-<strong>economic</strong> indicators.
