HDRCSocio-economic Baseline Survey of Chittagong Hill Tracts9011.4 Women’s Contributionn to Household Net IncomeThe survey made an attempt to explore the women’s contribution to annual household netincome. The respondents were requested to apportion the contributionn of the women ingenerating the annual net income of thehouseholdby source. The proportion of women’scontribution disclosed duringthe interview has been monetized. It is to note that, incalculation of women’s share in household net income, considered were only those amount ofincome which is earned by female household member through involvement in any economicactivities either inthe form of wage labor or having ownership of inputs of production ordirectlyearn from a particularr source. Domestic work has not been considered in estimatingwomen’s share in household net income. In fact, in the data collection process the amount ofincome from a particular source was attributed to female household member recognized bythe respective households.It is revealed that on the whole about 7% of the household annual net income (Tk.4,471) havebeen contributed by the working and/or income earning women members of the household(Table 11.4). It is to note that for Bangalee households the contribution of women ingenerating household income is only about 4%, while among the indigenous communities thesame isabout 11% %. It is to note that the Tanchangya13Tripura12contribution of women hasbeen mostlyBangalee4observed in fieldcropping and jumcultivation. Selling the collected products from forest resources, pettytrading, salariedemployment, stipend to female students and social securityare the commonly reportedsourcess of household income where the women contribute.Thoughh in the CHT, both male and female household members are working in most of theeconomic activities, it is found that women’s contribution to household income has not beenrecognized by theirsociety as a whole which is evident in the above estimation.
