17.3.2 Use of latrineHDRCSocio-economic Baseline Survey of Chittagong Hill Tracts138Analysis of the use of latrines among the surveyed population of CHT evidences that there isno substantial variation in use of latrine between the male and female members of CHTpopulation in general as well as among the Indigenous community and Bangalee inhabitantsindependently. While to see the situation of overall use of latrine use among CHT populationas a whole, it makes up about 81% in general and 35% for sanitary latrine in particular. Alittle closer look at the use of latrine reveals a considerable gap in latrine use between thebroad categories of CHT population i.e., overall surveyed CHT population, Indigenouscommunity and Bangalees. Regardless of sex, the use of latrine is higher among the Bangaleepeople compared to the indigenous people and accounts for 89% and 75% respectively.Alike, use of sanitary latrine is higher among the Bangalee people (42%) than among theindigenous people (30%).Of the sanitary latrine, use of ring slablatrine with or without water seal issomewhat higher among all the threebroad category of surveyed CHTpopulation. In contrast, of all theunhygienic/non-sanitary latrines, use ofpit latrine is remarkably higher andranging from 39% to 43% among maleand female members of all the threebroad categories of CHT. To the otherend across the three broad categories,on an average 11%-25% female and 12%-26% male have reported of not using any latrineother than open-air defecation (Annex Table 17.11).A quite large proportion (40%) of children among the Indigenous people are not using anytype of latrine and those who are using latrine, bulk (32%) of them use unhygienic pit latrine. The corresponding figures for use of latrine by children among the Bangalee is 15% and 43%of them use unhygienic pit latrine. In others words, the common use of latrine by the childrenamong overall surveyed population of CHT is unhygienic pit latrine (36%) followed by ringslab latrine (11%) without water seal. But a large proportion does not use latrine and defecatein open field under open sky (Annex Table: 17.11.).17.3.3 Disposal of children’s excretaFigure 17.9: Use of Latrine among the residents of CHTSanitary Non-sanitary Open Air45 46 44 45 47 4842 4235 3530 3026 2520 1812 11Male Female Male Female Male FemaleAs regard to disposal of children’sexcreta, who are not using latrine, alittle less than two-thirds of thehouseholds of indigenous andsimilar proportion of Bangaleehave reported to dispose that at thegarbage stack/drain.
