HDRC<strong>Socio</strong>-<strong>economic</strong> <strong>Baseline</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chittagong</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Tracts</strong>CHAPTER XIIHOUSEHOLD EXPENDITURE9312.1 IntroductionThe accompanying chapter presents the household expenditure status <strong>of</strong> rural CHT and bycommunities. In the process <strong>of</strong> generating expenditure data, two approaches have beenadministered: (i) collection <strong>of</strong> information on annual food consumption (physical quantityand prices <strong>of</strong> relevant items for a representative week), and (ii) collection <strong>of</strong> information onall items related to non-food expenditure (keeping in mind the possibilities <strong>of</strong> non-biasedrecall period for each <strong>of</strong> the items). The quantity <strong>of</strong> yearly consumption for each <strong>of</strong> the fooditems has been estimated and monetized using the relevant price information. For non-fooditems, the annual expenditure against each <strong>of</strong> the items has been collected from each samplehousehold. The total annual household expenditure for each sample household has beencalculated by adding together food and non-food expenditures.12.2 Household Annual ExpenditureThe average household annual expenditure in CHT is low. It is about 85% <strong>of</strong> national ruralaverage annual household expenditure. Moreover, Box 12.1: Household Annual Expenditure (adjusted): 2008comparison between CHT-Bangalee household CHT (rural): Tk. 62,282Bangladesh (rural): Tk. 73,402and national rural scenario reveals that the earlier Estimated by authors on basis <strong>of</strong> HIES 2005, (BBS, 2007a)spends about 6 percentage points less (Tk.68,730), while similar comparison between indigenous households and rural Bangladeshshows that the indigenous households spend (Tk. 57,038) about four-fifth <strong>of</strong> the amountspend by an average rural household <strong>of</strong> Bangladesh. Across the indigenous communities, thelowest annual expenditure is incurred by the Pangkhuas (Tk. 40,407), and close to them interms <strong>of</strong> the same is the Lushais (Tk. 44,232).
