Excavation and Trenching.– All trenches 1.2 metre or more in depth, shall at all timebe supplied with at least one ladder for each 30 meter in length of fraction thereofladder shall be extended from bottom of the trench to at least 1 metre above the surfaceof the ground. The side of the trenches which are 1.5 metre or more in depth shall bestopped back to give suitable slopes or securely held by timber bracing so as to avoidthe danger of sides to collapse. The excavated materials shall not be placed within 1.5metre of the edge of the trench or half of the depth of the trench whichever is morecutting shall be done from top to bottom. Under no circumstances under mining orundercutting shall be done.3. Demolition- Before any demolition work is commenced and also during the processof the works: :-(a)(b)(c)All roads and open areas adjacent to the work site shall either be closed orsuitably protected.No electric cable or apparatus which is liable to be a source of danger over acable or apparatus used by the operator shall remain electrically charged.All precautionary steps shall be taken to prevent danger to persons employedfrom risk of fire or explosion of flooring. No floor roof or other part of thebuilding shall be so overloaded with debris or materials as to render it unsafe .4. Painting- All necessary personal safety equipment as considered adequate by theEngineer-in-charge should be kept available for the use of person employed on the siteand maintained in a condition suitable for immediate use, and the contractor shouldtake adequate steps to ensure proper use of equipment by those concerned.(a)(b)(c)(d)(e)Workers employed on mixing asphaltic materials, cement ,lime mortars shallbe provided with protective footwear and protective goggles.Stone breakers shall be provided with protective goggles and protectiveclothings, and seated at sufficiently safe intervals.Those engaged in welding works shall be provided with welder's protect.When workers are employed in sewers and manholes which are in use, thecontractors shall ensure that the manhole covers are open and are ventilated atleast for an hour before the work shall be coronded of with suitable railing andprovided with warning signals or boards to prevent accident to the public.The contractor shall not employ man below the age of 18 and woman on thework of painting with products containing lead in any form whenever manabove the age of 18 are employed on the work of lead painting the followingprecautions should be taken :-(i) No paint containing lead or lead shall be used except in the form of pasteor ready made paint.

II ]191[ Appendix 2.10 A(ii) Able face masks should be supplied for use by the workers when paintapplied in the form of spray or a surface having lead paint dry and rubbleand scrapped.(iii)Overhauls shall be supplied by the contractor to the workmen andadequate facilities shall be provided to enable the working painters towash during the cessations of work.5. Drowning-When the work is done near any place where there is risk of drowning allnecessary equipments should be provided and kept ready for use and all necessary stepstaken for prompt rescue of any person in danger and adequate provision should bemade for prompt first aid treatment for all injuries likely to be sustained during thecourse of the work.6. Machines- Use of hoisting machines and tackle including their attachments anchorageand support shall conform to use the following standard or condition.(a)(b)(c)(d)(e)These shall be of good mechanical construction, sound material and adequatestrength and free from patent defect and shall be kept in good repair and in goodworking order.Every rope used in hoisting or lowering materials or as a means ofsuspension shall be of durable quality and adequate strength and free from patentdefects.Every crane driver or hoisting appliances operator shall be properly qualified andno persons under an age of 21 years should incharge of any hoisting machineincluding any scaffold which or give signals to operator.In case of every hoisting machine and every chain ring lowering or as means ofsuspensions, the safe working load shall be ascertained by adequate means. Everyhoisting machine and gear referred to above shall be plainly marked with the safeworking load. In case of a hoisting machine having a variable safe working loadeach safe working load of the conditions under which it is applicable shall beclearly indicated. No part of any machine or of any gear referred to above in thisparagraph shall be loaded beyond the safe working load except for load purposeof testing.In case of departmental machine the safe working and load shall be notified by theelectrical engineer–in– charge. As regards contractor machine the contractor shallnotify the safe working load of the machine to the Engineer-in-Charge, wheneverhe brings any machinery to site of work and get verified by the electrical engineerconcerned.Motors gearing transmission, electric wiring and other dangerous parts of thehoisting appliance should be provided with efficient safe guards and with meansas will reduced the minimum of the risk of the accidental descent of the loadadequate precautions should be taken to reduce to the minimum the risk of anypart of a suspended load be coming accidentally displaced. When workersemployed electrical installations which are already unregistered, insulating mats,wearing apparel such as gloves sleeves and boots as may necessary should be
