Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.)If more than one year elapses between a student’s passing his or her finalexamination and depositing the dissertation with the Graduate College,the dissertation must be accompanied by a statement from the executiveofficer of the student’s major department to the Dean of the GraduateCollege. The statement should recommend acceptance on the basis thatthe thesis is essentially the one previously defended and the late awardof the degree is appropriate.Students are not eligible to participate in commencement unless theyhave both defended and deposited the dissertation.Time LimitsThe time limit to obtain the doctorate in all programs in the College ofEducation is seven years. The final authorized term is set to seven yearsfrom the time a student starts a doctoral program in Educationirrespective of whether completing the Master’s degree at the Universityof Illinois or elsewhere.41
