Final ExaminationDoctor of Education Degree (Ed.D.)The student must be registered during the term (including summer) ofthe final oral examination in which the dissertation is presented anddefended before an examining committee. This committee is usually thesame one as for the preliminary oral examination. Membership criteriafor the final oral examination are the same as for the preliminary oralexamination committee (described on page 50). The student mustpresent the dissertation to the final examination committee for readingtwo weeks before the examination; in some cases it may be morereasonable to allow three weeks.Final oral exams are oral and public. The Graduate College requires thatthe final oral examination form should be completed by the departmentand forwarded to Instructional Programs Office, Room 120 Education,three weeks prior to the exam. The final oral examination will beconducted in a room that will accommodate at least ten people, althougha larger room will be reserved if the committee is aware that morepeople will attend the oral. The committee should meet in private beforebeginning the exam. Public cannot ask questions or give input duringexam. At conclusion of exam, committee should meet in private todiscuss the results and then inform candidate of the decision.All committee members’ signatures are required on three copies of theCertificate of Approval form (two for the Graduate College and one forthe department) and one Certificate of Results of Final Examination form(Graduate College). Committee members have the right to review thefinal copy of the dissertation before signing the forms. Only approvedcommittee members may sign these forms. The student may requesttheir signatures on additional approval forms.Registration For Final Examination For Doctoral DegreeThe Graduate College requires registration in 499 in the term in whichthe student takes the final examination for the doctoral degree, with twoexceptions. First, a student who was registered for the spring semesterneed not register for summer term 1 if the final examination precedes thefirst day of summer term 2. Second, a student who was registered forsummer term 2 need not register for the fall semester if the finalexamination occurs on or before the last day to take the finalexamination for the doctoral degree in October. The second exceptionprovides a grace period at the beginning of the fall semester for studentswho are unable to assemble their dissertation committees over thesummer.53
