Doctor of Education Degree (Ed.D.)combination of academic courses and professional experiences over fourconsecutive semesters. This may or may not include summer sessions, atthe discretion of the student and the adviser.During the four consecutive semesters, a minimum of four academicunits of coursework must be taken on the UIUC campus. The four unitsmay be scheduled in a manner that best fits the residency plan, asspecified below. However, students must maintain continuousenrollment during the residence period. Thesis (499) or independentstudy (449) credit may not be counted in satisfying the four unitrequirement but may be used to meet the continuous enrollmentrequirement.To satisfy the residence requirement, Ed.D. candidates must haveapproval both prior to beginning the residency and after its completion.Prior to beginning the residency, plans listing courses to be taken tosatisfy the requirement and describing the way in which academic workwill be integrated with professional experience during the residencymust be submitted by students with the signed approval of their advisersor by departments (in the case of cohort programs) to the Associate Deanfor Academic Affairs. The plan should include:a) a statement of purpose showing how coursework and professionalexperience are related and a rationale for this plan;b) a statement of expected outcomes;c) a clear statement of the courses to be taken, the semester in whichthey will be taken (understanding that revisions may be necessary),and the specific professional experience to which they relate; andd) a plan for how students are expected to interact with faculty and otherstudents, to read widely within and beyond the major field, and tocontemplate scholarly issues as they relate to professional practice.After completion of an approved plan by an Ed.D. candidate, the advisermust sign the plan and resubmit for final approval to the Associate Deanfor Academic Affairs.Evaluation of Academic ProgressEach department has a procedure for evaluating a student’s progresstoward the doctoral degree. These procedures have been approved bythe Graduate Programs Committee and are on file in the InstructionalPrograms Office. The evaluation of academic progress, whether byexamination or other formal review, results in a decision regardingstudent progress. When a decision is made that a student is not making43
Doctor of Education Degree (Ed.D.)satisfactory progress, the student, the adviser, and the InstructionalPrograms Office will be notified in writing by the department. Thisevaluation will take place no later than the end of the second year after astudent enters the Graduate College.Qualifying ExaminationsProcedures Beginning January 1, 1996The Qualifying Examinations are written comprehensive examinationsadministered to doctoral students near the completion of their coursework. The examinations are scheduled by faculty advisers through thedepartment office. Purposes of the qualifying examinations in theCollege of Education include: assessment of the candidate's breadth inthe discipline and depth in areas of interest; providing opportunity toexplore, make connections, and integrate content in the discipline. Theexam is comprised of the following parts.The General Field ExamAll Ed.D. candidates will take a General Field Examination covering thefield of study embraced by the home department or division. Eachdepartment faculty will establish procedures for developing thequestions and selecting at least three readers for the General Field Exam.Readers must be faculty members of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with expertise in the field being examined. The departmentfaculty will also determine whether an on-site or take-home format willbe used for the General Field Exam.The Special Field ExamAll Ed.D. candidates will take a Special Field Examination covering anarea of specialization proposed by the student in the QualifyingExamination Information with the concurrence of the adviser. TheSpecial Field should be a scholarly specialization more broadlyconceived than the anticipated dissertation topic.The adviser will be responsible for developing questions for the SpecialField Exam, drawing upon the expertise of other faculty when needed.The adviser, in consultation with the candidate, will also determine theformat of the examination and select at least three faculty readers withexpertise in the field being examined.44
