One of the main tasks of the faculty is toensure that public health professionals receive high quality training. This includesensuring that these future professionals have basic knowledge and skills concerningOSH.Aims and ObjectivesThe aim of the course of occupational safety fundamentals is to provide basicknowledge, skills and competencies in the area of occupational and fire safety. Itcovers legal provisions and requirements for the working environment, protectionprinciples and methods and ways to reduce occupational risk. The programme takesinto account the regulations and requirements regarding risk assessment and includesthe use of suitable protective equipment.S c o p eCourse content, structure and durationThe course of occupational safety fundamentals, carried out by professional staffof the Faculty of Public Health, targets the B.Sc. students of the faculty during onesemester of their education. The content of the programme covers basic OSHsubjects:OO accident losses;OO liabilities and safety legislation, workers compensation, OSH Legal Acts;OO management and its responsibilities for safety;OO hazards and their control;OO promoting safe practices;OO appraising plant safety;OO planning for emergencies;OO ‘Human – Machine – Environment’ system;OO organisational and technical means;OO collective and personal protective means, acceleration;OO falls, falling objects and other impacts, mechanical injuries;OO heat and temperature;OO pressure hazards;OO electrical hazards;OO lightning safety;OO fires and fire suppression;OO explosions and explosives;OO hazards of toxic materials;OO radiation, vibration and noise;OO essential safety and health requirements for technological processes, workstations,work equipment and work process;OO potentially dangerous equipment and dangerous works; andOO accident investigations.The structure of the didactic activities consists of lectures, seminars, practical workand individual work. The lectures for students are divided into 20 units. The diversityof methods used includes individual and group work, case studies, brainstormingsessions, individual studies, and preparing group reports.108
Mainstreaming occupational safety and health into university educationLearning objectivesKnowledge/skills: The acquisition of knowledge concerning basic occupationalsafety and fire safety: legal provisions and requirements in order to protect workersagainst occupational risks or to reduce these kinds of risks; general requirements forworkstations; work equipment and work conditions; protection principles; and meansto avoid exposure to dangerous factors.Competencies: The acquisition of the ability to assess the risk at workstations and tochoose the suitable protective equipment to avoid exposure to dangerous factors.AssessmentThe student’s knowledge and skills are assessed during the study of each subjectand on its completion. For the course on occupational safety fundamentals, quizzesand personal written work with presentation are used as the means of evaluation.Additionally, there is a requirement for attendance, which is obligatory.E u r o p e a n Ag e n c y f o r Sa f e t y a n d He a l t h a t Wo r kCompetence of teachersThe qualifications of the professional staff are crucial. Thus, in order to ensure higheducational quality, the teachers are regularly certified, certain curricula and synopsesare evaluated, and instructors improve their knowledge and skills by taking specialeducational and teaching courses. In addition, new education technologies are beingimplemented.Results and evaluationThe course is an established part of the curriculum. The whole course, including theOSH module, has been externally assessed as meeting high standards. It is importantfor the university that their courses meet European and international standards. Analumni organisation was established in 2003, which is going to play an active role inthe quality assurance at the faculty.Problems facedAs mentioned above, it is crucial to have teachers with the necessary skills andexpertise. It is also a challenge to have good teaching resources. To complementexisting resources e-learning is being developed.Success factorsThe teaching expertise is available within the university and the course is compulsory.It is important for the university to be recognised as having achieved high teachingstandards that meet European and international standards. This also means that thereis support for high standards in the area of OSH education. OSH is seen to be anessential part of the teaching programme.T r a n s f e r a b i l i t yThe general approach and the majority of elements of the programme could beimplemented by other tertiary educational institutions, although it would have to beadapted to the different legal contexts etc.109
