The shortage of such materials was often the reason for the neglector marginalization of OSH issues in teaching programmes. To solve the problemthe Central Institute for Labour Protection in collaboration with university teachersdeveloped model programmes of OSH education tailored to several university profiles:technical studies, human and social studies and medical studies. Taking advantage ofmodern technologies CIOP-PIB developed the resources as a multimedia educationalpackage for tertiary education purposes.The task was carried out within the framework of two long-term governmentalprogrammes which are coordinated and conducted by the CIOP-PIB - Safety andhealth protection of man in the working environment and Adjusting working conditions inPoland to the European Union Standard.Aims and objectivesOO To provide high-quality didactic materials in the field of OSH to fulfil the needsidentified by university boards;OO To develop user-friendly materials that could serve as a support for teachers, whoare obliged to include OSH issues into the teaching programmes; andOO To maximise the use and flexibility of the resources and make them accessibleto as many users as possible. A multimedia format was chosen and both printedtextbooks and an electronic version of the package were developed.ScopeIn 2000 CIOP-PIB completed its works on the educational package aimed at tertiaryeducation. This interactive multimedia educational tool entitled ‘Work knowledge –safety, health, ergonomics’ was designed to serve as a support for teachers as well asa source of OSH knowledge for self-learning students. The programme comprises a60-hour course and is tailored to three education profiles: technology and extractivesciences, natural and medical sciences, and social sciences. The whole packageis organised in eight independent thematic modules: Ergonomics – basics, Legalprotection of work, Anthropometrical and biomechanical factors, Physiological factors,Psychological and social factors, Risks related to dangerous and hazardous substances inthe workplace, Diagnostics and design of anthropotechnical systems, Managing OSH.Each module is an active tool for supporting academic teachers and can also be usedfor self-study. The package contains text books, dictionaries, exercises and PowerPointpresentations available as traditional printed materials as well as a multimedia package.The materials are available on CD and via the internet. The multimedia version allowstexts and presentations to be printed, the preparation of one’s own presentations andthe assessment of acquired knowledge. The materials are available to all universities.The multimedia version was also included in the system that supports distancelearning in the ‘Learning Space’. Through this system the CIOP conducts educationvia the Internet on ‘Ergonomics and occupational safety’ for students of technicaluniversities.The package provides an important tool for lecturers to use when covering OSHissues in their standard lectures within the teaching programme. The multimediaeducational package is available in two versions – one for teachers that supportsdidactic process, the other for individual students that facilitates self-studying.Each of the thematic modules includes the following elements:O O Source text combined with a drop-down index. The source text is composed ofhierarchically-titled parts. It contains pictures, transparencies and tables, animations76
Mainstreaming occupational safety and health into university educationthat are activated by icons, links to bibliography and to dictionary terms defined inthe particular thematic module;O O Teacher’s guide – conspectus including documents on particular thematicmodules – a general module card and a card with specific parts within the module.It includes exercises, tests, methodological hints, an index of relevant slides,bibliography, etc;OODictionary – covers terms introduced in the source text, with relevant definitionsand links to a source text;O O Set of slides (pictures, tables, animations and text slides) that is connected to thesource text, containing relevant links and combination of optional comments; andOO Set of videos, video clips.The multimedia version of these materials is designed for conducting different trainingsessions which provide general knowledge on occupational safety and health, andto enable the preparation of didactic materials. The videos help to illustrate lectures,identify hazards at workplaces and conduct occupational risks assessment.E u r o p e a n Ag e n c y f o r Sa f e t y a n d He a l t h a t Wo r kResults and evaluationThe growing demand for electronic multimedia didactic materials in Poland includingin the OSH field and the relatively poor availability of such OSH materials in Polandwas one of the factors that contributed to a successful welcome for the package.The common availability of the multimedia educational materials as well as theirtransferability and possibility of using them during lectures, trainings etc. are positivefactors that contribute to the growth of OSH awareness among students and amongemployers and employees. The package is regularly up-dated and modernised: in2004-2006 a significant verification of the source material took place, and video clipsand films were added.The latest electronic version of the materials can be downloaded free of charge fromthe website of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. An official letter wassent to all universities to present the OSH educational package and inviting them toinclude it in their teaching programmes. The expected outcome of the project is agreatly improved knowledge on occupational risks and constantly growing awarenessof OSH issues among university graduates.Problems facedThe multimedia form of education could come up against some obstacles relatingto the programme’s technical requirements. For example, not all the universities canprovide a sufficient number of computers with the relevant software for the classesor sufficient internet access. Another possible problem in some public or non-publicuniversities concerns the lack of well-prepared lecturers to teach about OSH issues.Success FactorsIt was important that the development arose out of a need identified by universitiesand that they were involved in the development process. It was developed tosupport a teaching process that was already taking place. It was important that thedevelopment was part of a larger strategy on OSH and OSH education developmentand that it was supported by the Ministry responsible for education.The package comprises unique material approved by many specialists, which servesas a guarantee for quality and relevance.77
