<strong>Mainstreaming</strong> <strong>occupational</strong> <strong>safety</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>into</strong> <strong>university</strong> educationthat are activated by icons, links to bibliography <strong>and</strong> to dictionary terms defined inthe particular thematic module;O O Teacher’s guide – conspectus including documents on particular thematicmodules – a general module card <strong>and</strong> a card with specific parts within the module.It includes exercises, tests, methodological hints, an index of relevant slides,bibliography, etc;OODictionary – covers terms introduced in the source text, with relevant definitions<strong>and</strong> links to a source text;O O Set of slides (pictures, tables, animations <strong>and</strong> text slides) that is connected to thesource text, containing relevant links <strong>and</strong> combination of optional comments; <strong>and</strong>OO Set of videos, video clips.The multimedia version of these materials is designed for conducting different trainingsessions which provide general knowledge on <strong>occupational</strong> <strong>safety</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>health</strong>, <strong>and</strong>to enable the preparation of didactic materials. The videos help to illustrate lectures,identify hazards at workplaces <strong>and</strong> conduct <strong>occupational</strong> risks assessment.E u r o p e a n Ag e n c y f o r Sa f e t y a n d He a l t h a t Wo r kResults <strong>and</strong> evaluationThe growing dem<strong>and</strong> for electronic multimedia didactic materials in Pol<strong>and</strong> includingin the OSH field <strong>and</strong> the relatively poor availability of such OSH materials in Pol<strong>and</strong>was one of the factors that contributed to a successful welcome for the package.The common availability of the multimedia educational materials as well as theirtransferability <strong>and</strong> possibility of using them during lectures, trainings etc. are positivefactors that contribute to the growth of OSH awareness among students <strong>and</strong> amongemployers <strong>and</strong> employees. The package is regularly up-dated <strong>and</strong> modernised: in2004-2006 a significant verification of the source material took place, <strong>and</strong> video clips<strong>and</strong> films were added.The latest electronic version of the materials can be downloaded free of charge fromthe website of the Ministry of Science <strong>and</strong> Higher Education. An official letter wassent to all universities to present the OSH educational package <strong>and</strong> inviting them toinclude it in their teaching programmes. The expected outcome of the project is agreatly improved knowledge on <strong>occupational</strong> risks <strong>and</strong> constantly growing awarenessof OSH issues among <strong>university</strong> graduates.Problems facedThe multimedia form of education could come up against some obstacles relatingto the programme’s technical requirements. For example, not all the universities canprovide a sufficient number of computers with the relevant software for the classesor sufficient internet access. Another possible problem in some public or non-publicuniversities concerns the lack of well-prepared lecturers to teach about OSH issues.Success FactorsIt was important that the development arose out of a need identified by universities<strong>and</strong> that they were involved in the development process. It was developed tosupport a teaching process that was already taking place. It was important that thedevelopment was part of a larger strategy on OSH <strong>and</strong> OSH education development<strong>and</strong> that it was supported by the Ministry responsible for education.The package comprises unique material approved by many specialists, which servesas a guarantee for quality <strong>and</strong> relevance.77
