Therole of the architect is therefore crucial and they need to include OSH in their wayof thinking, their concepts and the plans for the future use of the building. OSHalso needs to be taken into account during the construction phase and architectsplay an important role here too. In order to prepare the architects for these OSHresponsibilities, training was set up to be provided during the final year of thearchitectural studies. The methodology used is a general, participative and multidisciplinaryapproach that favours collective responses to OSH issues.Integration of OSH at the Faculty of Metallurgy of the TechnicalUniversity of Kosice, Slovak RepublicThe aim of the programme is to include OSH education and OSH management inthe educational process at the Faculty of Metallurgy of the Technical University inKosice. In the second year of level I (BSc level), all students of the faculty learn aboutintegrated managerial systems which are based on the norms ISO 9001:2000 (QualityManagement Systems), ISO 14000:2004 and EMAS (Environmental Managementsystems) and OHSAS 18001:1999. In the third year of level I (BSc study) and the fifth yearof engineering study (level II) students of the Integrated Management Departmentstudy OSH management. The study programme at the second level places theemphasis on the integration of environmental and OSH management systems intototal quality management (TQM). Compulsory subjects evaluated in the final examare total quality management, and environmental and OSH management.Integration of OSH at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering ofthe Technical University of Kosice, Slovak RepublicIn 1993 an OSH study programme was initiated in the Faculty of MechanicalEngineering at the Technical University of Kosice with the support of BUGHWuppertal (Germany). Collaboration with manufacturing plants, state authorities andother foreign universities through projects, workshops and conferences appeals tostudents and raises their social awareness and their interest in this field. Since 2001,the Department of Safety and Quality has had accreditation in this area and alsohas an active and varied research programme. It has improved its qualifications andquality standards, for example, through special certifications, scientific publicationsand research projects.Teaching OSH in construction engineering and architecturestudies: cooperation with statutory insurance organisations andthe Labour Inspectorate, GermanyCivil engineering, architecture, and facility management students attending theUniversity of Applied Sciences (FH) Mainz are taught about safety and health onconstruction sites. This course enables them to gain an additional qualification as asafety and health coordinator after two years of additional practical experience.Promoting safety culture at DIT – A step closer to the real world,IrelandThe Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) provides vocational training, as well asundergraduate degree courses and post-graduate activities. The safety departmenthas introduced a holistic approach aimed at maintaining safety and promoting a26

Part of the approach involves consultation with the students’ union and their participation in safetymeetings.Teaching OSH and ergonomics at Budapest University of Technology and Economics(BME), HungaryOSH and ergonomics are integrated into various degree courses offered across the university, including acompulsory module on the MBA business studies course. The Department of Ergonomics and Psychologyin the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences provides the OSH and ergonomics teaching to the otherdepartments. Theoretical and active learning methods are employed, including project work and use ofcase studies. SOL is utilised (Safety through Organisation Learning; a safety-related event analysis methoddeveloped at the Berlin University of Technology).
