Participantsbegan to look in a different way at the work on a construction site. They were keenand receptive learners (see also success factors).OO Questions still remain, especially in the perception of the differences between thefunctions of the architect and the safety and health coordinator.OO This basic training was meant for final-year students and their teachers. The aim isto integrate a similar but extended training into earlier years of the degree course.Through this project La Cambre seeks involvement with the European network‘FOCUS’ regarding training and accreditation concerning safety and health in theconstruction industry and the AIFC, an inter-university association for the training ofthe safety and health coordinators which organises courses.Problems facedOO The time spent on the construction site for observation was considered to be tooshort and the number of practical exercises too limited. Only some professions andactivities could be observed, there was not enough time to consider all of them.OO Lack of professional experience of the young workers. This makes it difficult forthem to realise the importance of the risks and the ‘best techniques’ since theyhave no experience yet with the possible outcomes of risks and therefore theimportance of ‘best techniques’. They are not yet aware of ‘professional norms’.OO Young workers are less critical about the subjects and issues taught. This meansthat there is less debate and discussion about the information that is transferred.Success factorsOO Incorporation of a practical approach directly related to the future work:OO time spent on training sites; andOO use of the construction school, with real equipment.OO Architecture students are quite receptive to risk education and OSH training for anumber of reasons:OO interest in the practical aspects of their future working environment and futurecareers;OO interest in human and social aspects of the profession of architect; and.OO awareness and interest in architectural ergonomics.OO Availability of expert trainers;OO Partnership approach; andOO Legal requirements on architects that underpin the need for the training.T r a n s f e r a b i l i t yThe project could be transferred to other schools and other countries. In the lattercase, the section on legislation would need to be adapted to the transfer country.112
