Mainstreaming occupational safety and health into university educationPreventing risks to young workersAccording to the EU-OSHA report Preventing risks to young workers: policy, programmesand workplace practices (2009) there is a number of common success factors that canbe identified in the cases and programmes presented. These success factors include:OO mainstreaming youth into prevention actions;OO basing actions and interventions on risk assessment, and ensuring that actions areimplemented and monitored;OO consultation and active participation of young workers;OO top level commitment to OSH measures to protect young people;OO the importance of learning from experiences of mainstreaming OSH into education,as recommendations regarding effective teaching of OSH in education are alsovalid for the workplace, such as:OO striking a balance between theory and practice;OO utilising suitable teaching resources and methods;OO the requirement for training for supervisors, mentors and trainers in their roleand in OSH; andOO partnershipOO the effectiveness of using peers, including more experienced young workersand the use of older, experienced workers as mentors. This provides a positiveexperience for both new workers and more senior colleagues;OO ensuring a close link to working life;OO having young people examine and solve real-work problems;OO feeding the results of such student work back into the real workplace riskassessment and prevention process. This makes the exercise meaningful foryoungsters and is of value to employers; andOO making OSH an integral part of doing the job right – at work and in vocationaltraining.E u r o p e a n Ag e n c y f o r Sa f e t y a n d He a l t h a t Wo r k171
