in search of the horse railway<br />

“175 year horse-drawn railway <strong>from</strong> Gmunden – Budweis”<br />

A must for railway fans but also for keen walkers and landscape<br />

aficionados! A theme route dotted with interesting display panels<br />

about the history of the southern route of the horse-drawn<br />

railway <strong>from</strong> Gmunden via Linz to Budweis. From the centre of<br />

Gmunden the Traun bridge is crossed towards the Annastrasse<br />

& Schlagenstrasse junction, onto the Grünbergweg at the level<br />

crossing (approx. 100m <strong>from</strong> Weyer Castle – Meissen porcelain<br />

exhibition) then along the railway route <strong>from</strong> Gmunden –<br />

Vorchdorf to Engelhof railway station (oldest railway station in<br />

continental Europe). Route length: approx. 2 km, walking time<br />

(in one direction): approx. 1 hour, you can return via Vorchdorf<br />

rail or city bus.<br />

Gmunden millennium route<br />

There are hikes atop the deposits of a former Ice Age glacier along<br />

the “Gmunden Millennium Route” within the spa town nearly<br />

exclusively surrounded by greenery. In addition to the scenically<br />

exciting and educationally significant sites, as well as parks, the<br />

route passes attractions worth visiting, such as the town museum,<br />

the museum for historic sanitary objects, the Gmunden ceramics<br />

workshops, the small Nuhsbaumer geological museum, Villa<br />

Toscana and the museum in Ort Castle.<br />

Gmunden old town theme route<br />

A historic tour according to the motto of “Stories <strong>from</strong> History”<br />

through the old town of Gmunden at Traunsee Lake with countless<br />

interesting views <strong>from</strong> then and now, many of these by illustrator<br />

and water colourist Carl Ritter (1807–1885).<br />

Path <strong>from</strong> Orth Lake Castle along the Esplanade to Gmunden city<br />

centre and then to the K-Hof Museum.<br />

Retracing the steps of the “Schlosshotel Orth” television series you<br />

will find interesting information on the original settings of the most<br />

successful German-speaking television series. From Gmunden to<br />

Ebensee you can visit the sites either by boat, rail, tramway and<br />

cable car or also by car.<br />

viechtau and its people”<br />

Easy hikes with 14 display panels in Altmünster and 8 panels<br />

in Neukirchen graphically explain the history and attractions. For<br />

families there are entertaining puzzles and painting fun.<br />

“via historica”<br />

Fifteen ambitiously designed enamel panels with texts by Alfred<br />

Komarek accompany a walk through Traunkirchen, which takes<br />

a trip through time, step by step through thousands of years.<br />

Duration per stage: approx. 45 minutes.<br />

salzkammergut’s historic salt Pipeline<br />

The route of the white gold <strong>from</strong> salt mountain Hallstatt to the<br />

saline in Ebensee, illustrated by display panels, Solestube, the<br />

world’s oldest active pipeline (with a total length of 42 km) and<br />

much more. Walking time: Ebensee – Langwies around 2 hours.<br />

theme route: work and industry<br />

This theme route shows the historic living and working conditions<br />

of the dawn of salt extraction until modern times. Walking time:<br />

approx. 1 hour, 45 minutes.<br />
