Chapter 6ConclusionThe Standard Model <strong>of</strong> particle physics is able to describe successfully <strong>the</strong> elementaryparticles and <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>teractions. The parameters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> model have been widely measured<strong>in</strong> diverse <strong>experiment</strong>s which made <strong>the</strong> Standard Model an excellent candidateto be a reference <strong>the</strong>ory for <strong>the</strong> description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature at <strong>the</strong> energy scale <strong>of</strong> Electroweak<strong>in</strong>teractions. Despite all <strong>the</strong> successes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> model, <strong>the</strong>re is a part for whichno <strong>experiment</strong>al evidence has been observed yet, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Higgs mechanism which isresponsible for giv<strong>in</strong>g mass to <strong>the</strong> elementary particles. This was discussed <strong>in</strong> detail <strong>in</strong>Chapter 1.A possible solution would be provided by <strong>the</strong> Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as itma<strong>in</strong>ly aimes to search for <strong>the</strong> miss<strong>in</strong>g particle predicted by <strong>the</strong> mechanism, namely<strong>the</strong> Higgs particle. S<strong>in</strong>ce March 2010, <strong>the</strong> LHC has been collid<strong>in</strong>g beams <strong>of</strong> protons ata center <strong>of</strong> mass energy <strong>of</strong> 7 TeV and <strong>the</strong> collision data has been recorded by detectors<strong>in</strong>stalled at four po<strong>in</strong>ts around <strong>the</strong> LHC ma<strong>in</strong> r<strong>in</strong>g, such as <strong>the</strong> <strong>CMS</strong> <strong>experiment</strong>(Compact Muon Solenoid). The full description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> LHC and <strong>the</strong> <strong>CMS</strong> <strong>experiment</strong>were given <strong>in</strong> Chapter 2.When protons collide, various objects can be produced at <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al state, such asisolated leptons and quarks. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory, quarks carry color-charges and<strong>the</strong>refore can not be observed <strong>in</strong> free forms. They hadronize and make a cascade <strong>of</strong>hadrons, which is referred to as jets. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> challenges at hadron collidersis how to def<strong>in</strong>e a jet and how to measure its energy. A simple def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>of</strong> a jet isto collect all <strong>the</strong> particles produced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hadronization process with<strong>in</strong> a cone around<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial quark. This works as a first guess but one should note that due to <strong>the</strong>existence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> magnetic field, <strong>the</strong> charged particles produced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cascade are bentand move away from <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial quark. This yields to a measurement <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> energy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> jets lower than its true energy, as <strong>the</strong> energy deposits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> escap<strong>in</strong>gparticles are not taken <strong>in</strong>to account <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> jet area considered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> jet reconstructionalgorithm. Therefore, jets need to be calibrated so that <strong>the</strong>ir energies are correctedback to <strong>the</strong>ir true values. The various jet def<strong>in</strong>itions and calibration strategies whichare <strong>in</strong>troduced with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>CMS</strong> collaboration, were expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Chapter 3.S<strong>in</strong>ce jets are produced <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al states <strong>of</strong> many channels <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest, it is desired todeterm<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>ir energy as precise as possible. Start<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> basel<strong>in</strong>e calibrationrecipe, <strong>the</strong> energy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> jets can be fur<strong>the</strong>r calibrated with <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> constra<strong>in</strong>ts127
