Chapter 4Reconstruct<strong>in</strong>g and Select<strong>in</strong>gPhysics Event4.1 Monte Carlo Event SimulationIn <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> <strong>experiment</strong>al data and to model <strong>the</strong> available physics <strong>the</strong>ories, <strong>the</strong> toyMonte Carlo data is produced. The first step <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Monte Carlo production cha<strong>in</strong> isgenerat<strong>in</strong>g physics “events”, i.e. sets <strong>of</strong> outgo<strong>in</strong>g particles produced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>teractionsbetween two <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g particles, followed by simulat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> detector response based on<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>teractions <strong>of</strong> particles produced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> event with <strong>the</strong> material <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> detector.Hence a very precise model<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> physics and a good understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> detectorshould result <strong>in</strong> simulated events similar to those from real collision.The whole generation cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> an event can be factorized <strong>in</strong>to several stages as illustrated<strong>in</strong> Figure 4.1.Figure 4.1: Illustration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> event generation cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> proton-proton collisionsadapted from [79].47
