66Acoustic modeAcoustic modeThe procedure for turning on the acoustic mode isdescribed in Chapter 4.4.When the acoustic mode is turned on, the meter guidesyou through the blood glucose test using beeps andannounces the result as a series of beeps. The meterbeeps additionally when the batteries are almost empty,the test cassette is empty or an error message isdisplayed.An intimate knowledge of how results are announcedas beeps and how to distinguish results from otherbeeps is crucial to reliably recognizing the result.The sections below explain the beeps in detail. Inaddition, training software (the BeepLearn program) tohelp you interpret results announced in the form ofbeeps is available on Cd from <strong>Accu</strong>-<strong>Chek</strong> CustomerCare at 1-800-363-7949.Visually impaired people should only use theacoustic mode if they have familiarizedthemselves fully with the acoustic modewith the assistance of a sighted person andhave demonstrated that they are able tounderstand results correctly without exceptionusing the acoustic mode. The acousticmode should always be used with great care.Otherwise there is a risk that the results willbe misinterpreted by the person performingthe test. An incorrect insulin dose resultingfrom a misinterpreted result can cause considerablehealth damage and can even befatal. Especially if unexpected and abnormalblood glucose values are obtained using theacoustic mode, the result must be checkedby repeating the test together with a sightedperson.Visually impaired people should not test theirblood glucose without assistance from asighted person.The meter must be regularly checked by asighted person for outwardly visible contamination.168
