V. 9. Skeleton Notes on the Kumarasambhavam313borrower, if loan there has been?pelv' (pelavaÌ): the other readings koml' (komalaÌ) and pezl'(peØalaÌ) are less commendable and not supported by Mallinath.pun" (punaÕ): on the other hand, however.5. Thus though she urged her, yet could not Mena rein in her daughter'sfixed purpose from action; for who can turn back (resist) a mindsteadfastly resolved on the object of its desire, or a downward movingstream?/uveC^am( (dhruvecchÀm): the reading vteC^am( (vratecchÀm) is weakand è[uteC^am( (ÙrutecchÀm) absolutely without force. Neither is noticedby Mallinath. The point of course is the unspeakable fixity ofher resolve and not its object.inyNtumuÛmat( (niyantumudyamÀt): the delicate etymological assonanceis a fine survival of one of Kalidasa's favourite rhetorical artifices.£Ûmat( (udyamÀt): this word is variously taken in various contexts.S. here renders by £Tsah (utsÀha), Apte by “fixed resolve” andDeshpande by “undertaking”, whereas Mallinath consistently rendersby £Ûog (udyoga). It is as well therefore to fix its exact meaning. The root ym( (yam) meaning “to put a strain on” with £d( (ud) “up” inan intensive, implies the strain put on the faculties in preparing foror making a great effort. It means therefore “active effort” or “endeavour”or else “active preparation”. In this latter sense Apte quotesgNtumuÛmo iviht" (gatumudyamo vihitaÕ) = preparations to go weretaken order for. In Sloka 3 the dative tpse (tapase) having the sameforce as an infinitive leads us to prefer this meaning; “effort towardsausterity” has no meaning in the context. I think in this Sloka, it has asMallinath perceived, the same sense. Uma is still in the stage of preparation, and is not yet even ready to ask her father's consent. Effortor endeavour would therefore be obviously out of place. Now theseare the only two ascertained senses of £Ûm (udyama). The senseof £Tsah (utsÀha) or undertaking cannot be established and is notrecognised by Apte. That of “perseverance”, “fixed resolve” givento it by A. in Sloka 3 and by Apte here seems to me equally withoutšit /uveC^amnuxastI suta' xxak mena n inyNtumuÛmat( -k ¡iPstaqRiSqrinXcy' mn" pyXc inMnai.mu%' p[tIpyet( --iti dhruvecchÀmanuÙÀsatÈ sutÀÌ ÙaÙÀka menÀ na niyantumudyamÀtka ÈpsitÀrthasthiraniÙcayaÌ manaÕ payaÙca nimnÀbhimukhaÌ pratÈpayet
