Suprabhat: A Review<strong>THE</strong> paper Suprabhat, a Bengali monthlyedited by Kumari Kumudini Mitra, daughter of Sj. Krishna KumarMitra, enters this month on its third year. The first issue ofthe new year is before us. We notice a great advance in the interestand variety of the articles, the calibre of the writers andthe quality of the writing. From the literary point of view thechief ornament of the number is the brief poem Duhkhabhisar,by Sj. Rabindranath Tagore. It is one of those poems in whichthe peculiar inimitable quality of our greatest lyric poet comesout with supreme force, beauty and sweetness. Rabindra Babuhas a legion of imitators and many have been very successful incatching up his less valuable mannerisms of style and verse, asis the manner of imitators all the world over. But the poignantsweetness, passion and spiritual depth and mystery of a poemlike this, the haunting cadences subtle with a subtlety which isnot of technique but of the soul, and the honeyladen felicity ofthe expression, these are the essential Rabindranath and cannotbe imitated, because they are things of the spirit and one musthave the same sweetness and depth of soul before one can hopeto catch any of these desirable qualities. We emphasise this inimitablenessbecause the legion of imitators we mention are doingharm to the progress of our poetry as well as to the reputation oftheir model and we would suggest to them to study this poem andrealise the folly of their persistent attempt. One of the most remarkablepeculiarities of Rabindra Babu's genius is the happinessand originality with which he has absorbed the whole spirit ofVaishnav poetry and turned it into something essentially the sameand yet new and modern. He has given the old sweet spirit ofemotional and passionate religion an expression of more delicateand complex richness voiceful of subtler and more penetratinglyspiritual shades of feeling than the deep-hearted but simple earlyage of Bengal could know. The old Vaishnav bhÀva — there isno English word for it, — was easily seizable, broad and strong.
