It is obvious that she could not at the same time sleep sittingand sleep with her arm as her pillow; if we are to render inzedŒzI (niØeduØÈ)= £pivZ$a (upaviØÒÀ) we must follow Mallinath “slept pillowed on herarm and sat on the bare ground”; but this is not justified by the Sanskrit;the word being a participle and not as it then should be, a finitetense like Axet (aÙeta) with or without c (ca). Moreover the idea ofsitting is foreign to the contrast between her former bed and herpresent, and therefore would not be introduced by Kalidasa.
