PRACTICES TIMELINEEvolution of <strong>Starbucks</strong> socially responsible coffee buying guidelines1998–2000 Conservation Principles for Coffee ProductionDeveloped through multistakeholder collaboration between nongovernmental organizations(NGOs) and industry associations in response to declining coffee prices. These principlesinfluenced <strong>Starbucks</strong> coffee buying guidelines.2001 <strong>Starbucks</strong> Preferred Supplier Program (PSP)Created in collaboration with Conservation International to ensure <strong>the</strong> sustainable productionof high-quality coffee. The program was based on a set of quality, social, environmental andeconomic guidelines.2002–2003 Conducted a two-year pilot of <strong>the</strong> program with coffee farmers, processors and exporters.Feedback was solicited and used to improve <strong>the</strong> program, including <strong>the</strong> introduction of morerelevant and specific guidelines and a third-party verification process.2004 C.A.F.E. PracticesPSP program was enhanced with guidance from Scientific Certifications Systems andrenamed Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices.Economic transparency became a prerequisite and defining component of C.A.F.E. Practices.Opened <strong>Starbucks</strong> Coffee Agronomy Company (Farmer Support Center) in Costa Rica to workmore closely with farmers and suppliers worldwide who are implementing <strong>the</strong> guidelines forC.A.F.E. Practices.2005 Continued to improve guidelines based on feedback from farmers, cooperatives, suppliersand NGOs.Created a supplement to <strong>the</strong> guidelines for small-holder farmers and cooperatives.Increased <strong>the</strong> number of verifiers and farmers trained on C.A.F.E. Practices in Latin America.2006ANDBEYONDExplore opening a Farmer Support Center in Asia and begin introducing C.A.F.E.
