Students at Kewena Gata High School in Daye, Ethiopia, now have access to newtextbooks as a result of financial support provided by <strong>Starbucks</strong> UK.<strong>Starbucks</strong> UK Offers Support to EthiopianCoffee CommunitySince 2003, <strong>Starbucks</strong> UK has directly supported coffeegrowingcommunities in <strong>the</strong> Sidamo region of Ethiopia withgrants for health and education. In Bensa Ware, waterborneillness has been noticeably reduced since <strong>the</strong> introduction ofa freshwater distribution system, and primary students nowhave access to new textbooks. The results are encouraging –Bensa’s local academic ranking improved from last to secondplace in a single year. In nearby Daye, grants from <strong>Starbucks</strong>UK provided new books for <strong>the</strong> high school and a newlibrary building.EUROPE/MIDDLE EAST/AFRICA (EMEA)• The UK – <strong>Starbucks</strong> Partners in Education programpromoted <strong>the</strong> benefits of libraries and reading to anestimated 2,200 children and parents; conductedcampaigns to collect 28,000 books for children; andhelped prepare 300 local youth for real-life employmentsituations. UK customers are also very keen on FairTrade Certified coffee, so it’s available in our UK storesevery day.• Germany – Encouraging children to read was <strong>the</strong> focusof our activities. To celebrate a nationwide Read Out Day,<strong>Starbucks</strong> stores hosted children for a day of reading andhot chocolate. The plan is to participate in Read OutDay again in partnership with Stiftung Lesen, a Germanfoundation focused on literacy.• Jordan – <strong>Starbucks</strong> Jordan provided support to one ofJordan’s primary orphanages, Mabarrat Um El Hussein,and <strong>the</strong> Arab Fund Society for Child Care. Bothorganizations are dedicated to improving child welfare.• Greece – We have built strong ties to <strong>the</strong> SOS Children’sVillages, a safe refuge for orphaned or abandoned children.In addition to charitable support for <strong>the</strong> organization, eachtime we open a new store, our partners adopt a child that<strong>the</strong>y plan outings with and also organize birthday partiesfor. Funds are also donated specifically for each child’sschool supplies, athletic gear and clo<strong>the</strong>s.CANADAIn major cities across Canada, free summer writing campswere offered to students from inner-city schools through<strong>Starbucks</strong> support provided to Frontier College, a nationalvolunteer-based literacy organization. In January 2005,our Canadian stores hosted “Lattes for Literacy Day” anddonated a portion of <strong>the</strong> sales to Frontier College for <strong>the</strong>summer program. This effort is part of our ongoing focusto improve literacy in Canada.42SOCIETY
