COMPARING C.A.F.E. PRACTICES TO COFFEECERTIFICATION SYSTEMS<strong>Starbucks</strong> admires <strong>the</strong> efforts o<strong>the</strong>r organizations aremaking to address <strong>the</strong> inequities coffee farmers face and toprotect <strong>the</strong> environment that sustains <strong>the</strong>m. Over <strong>the</strong> years,many of <strong>the</strong>se organizations have developed certificationsystems for coffee producers, with a range of objectives,each focused on a specific area of sustainability. For example,Fair Trade Certified coffee guarantees small producers indemocratically organized cooperatives a minimum price for<strong>the</strong>ir product. Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainable AgricultureNetwork (SAN) and <strong>the</strong> Smithsonian Migratory BirdCenter’s “Bird Friendly ® ” Coffee Program emphasizeenvironmental stewardship.<strong>Starbucks</strong> has drawn from <strong>the</strong> experience of many of <strong>the</strong>sesystems in <strong>the</strong> development of C.A.F.E. Practices,including <strong>the</strong> work of organizations that contributed to <strong>the</strong>Conservation Principles for Coffee Production – upon whichC.A.F.E. Practices is based. C.A.F.E. Practices includes manyof <strong>the</strong>se focus areas and ensures that suppliers to <strong>Starbucks</strong>are addressing a range of sustainability issues. C.A.F.E.Practices’ comprehensive sustainability criteria include aspectsranging from coffee quality to social, environmental andeconomic responsibility.A number of industry-developed initiatives have also beenlaunched to address certain aspects important to <strong>the</strong>irbusiness or to include producers from specific countries orfarm types. For example, Utz Kapeh certification has beenadopted by several multinational brands.
