Chapter 9: Saving to and Loading from DiskUsing a SCSI Hard DiskThe MPC3000’s SCSI port permits an external SCSI hard drive tobe used for all disk save and load operations. A 25-pin D-type SCSIconnector is used, which is compatible with hard drives used withthe Apple Macintosh. All that is required for interfacing with harddrives that use 50-pin connectors is the appropriate SCSI adaptercable. At time of printing of this manual, however, only the followinghave been tested with the MPC3000:• Syquest 44, 88 and 200 megabyte 5.25 inch removable drives• Syquest 105 and 270 megabyte 3.5 inch removable drivesIf you are unsure whether a specific hard drive will work with theMPC3000, call your Akai distributor.Changing the power-on delay:When the MPC3000’s power is turned on, the bottom line of thescreen shows the following message:Searching SCSI for hard disk... This informs you that the MPC3000 is scanning the SCSI port todetermine if a hard disk is connected. If a hard disk is connected to the SCSI port and the power for boththe hard disk and the MPC3000 is turned on simultaneously, thismessage will persist until the hard disk apine up to the properoperating speed, then the MPC3000’s MAIN SCREEN will appear, indicating that the MPC3000 is ready for use with the hard disk.If no hard disk is connected to the SCSI port, this message willappear for 30 seconds. This is because the MPC3000 can’t tell thedifference between no hard disk and a hard disk spinning up tospeed, which can take up to 30 seconds for some hard disks. If no hard disk is connected and you want to cancel this delay, pressSOFT KEY 4 while the message appears on the screen. If no hard disk is connected and you want to automatically eliminatethis delay every time you turn the power on, press the DISKkey, then 9, then 4. The following screen will appear:Page 187
