Chapter 3: Recording Sequencesfields allow the active track to play simultaneously through anadditional channel/port combination. If no additional output channel/portis desired, select OFF here.• The Velocity% field (Vel%:100in the example screen):This is an overall output volume control for active track. However, unlike a normal volume control, this function actually scales thevelocities of all notes that play from the track in real time, acting asa real-time dynamics control. The range is from 0 to 200%. Valuesfrom 0 to 99 reduce velocities; values from 101 to 200 increase them.Select 100 for no effect.• The Program Number field (Pgm:OFF ):This field permits a MIDI program number (1-128) to be assigned tothe active track. To select no program assignment for the activetrack, enter a 0 in this field and OFF will be displayed. Whenever anew sequence is selected, if any of the sequence’s tracks containprogram number assignments, those program numbers will beimmediately sent out over the track’s assigned MIDI channel/port(not the auxiliary MIDI channel/port) to the external synthesizer, causing it to change to the assigned program number. This way, allexternal synthesizers are immediately changed to the correctprogram numbers by merely selecting the sequence. If a track’sType field is set to DRUM, the assigned program number willchange the internal sound generator’s active program number.COMMENT: It is also possible to record MIDI programchange events at any location within a track, either in realtime or in Step Edit mode. (See the “Step Edit” section inthe “Editing Sequences” chapter of this manual for moredetails about this.) It is important to note that if one of theseprogram change events is inserted mid-sequence and theportion of the sequence containing the change is played(causing the external synthesizer to change to the new program),the original program number (as set up in the ProgramNumber field) will not be re-sent over MIDI until thesequence is reselected in the Sequence Number field. Simplyrestarting the sequence will not implement the programchange. If the MPC3000 did send out all assigned programnumbers whenever PLAY START were pressed, this problemwould be corrected, but there would also be a brief delay atthe start of the sequence because the external synthesizersmust take time to change their program data. If you do wanta program change to be sent out whenever PLAY START ispressed, it is better to insert a MIDI Program Change eventat the start of the track, using Step Edit.• The Now field (Now:001.01.00(00:00:00:0000:00:00:00) in theexample screen):This field displays the current position within the sequence. The leftside of this field shows the current position in musical terms—as athree-part number separated by decimal points.Page 37
