McNAIRthe McNair Asian Elephant Habitat at the Houston Zoo,the jogging trail at Discovery Green, Equestrian Centerfor the San Jacinto Girl Scouts, McNair Cub Scout AdventureWorld, the Computer Training Center Room forthe United Way, McNair Hall at Houston Baptist University’sCultural Arts Center, and sponsorship of <strong>com</strong>munityoutreach programs for the Houston Symphony andHouston Grand Opera. The McNairs endowed the Janiceand Robert McNair Chair in Public Policy at the JamesA. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University,which currently is held by the founding director, The HonorableEdward P. Djerejian. The McNairs turned theirphilanthropic focus to medical research in 2007 and gavea transformational gift to establish the McNair MedicalInstitute at Baylor College of Medicine to fund the McNairScholars Program, which recruits top physicians/scientistsin the fi elds of juvenile diabetes, breast and pancreaticcancer and the neurosciences. Additional McNairScholars Programs were established at M.D. Anderson,Menninger Clinic, Texas Children’s Hospital and TexasHeart Institute. One of the McNairs’ more interesting projectssupported in <strong>2012</strong> was the adoption of two horsesfor the Houston Police Department’s Mounted Patrol bycontributing annually for their upkeep. The McNairs renamedthe horses Texan Star and Cushing 56.McNair is the recipient of many awards, including theAnti-Defamation League’s Torch of Liberty Award, theNorthwood University Outstanding Business LeaderAward, the Association for Private Enterprise Education’sHerman W. Lay Memorial Award, the DistinguishedAmerican Award from the Houston Chapter of the NationalFootball Foundation, the Distinguished Citizen Awardfrom the Rotary Club of Houston, The South Main CenterAssociation City Builder Award, the Houston AdvertisingFederation Annual Trailblazer Award recognizing himfor signifi cantly enhancing the overall image of Houstonboth locally and globally, the Distinguished Citizen Awardfrom the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts ofAmerica, The Denton A. Cooley Leadership Award fromthe Texas Heart Institute, the Freedoms Foundation atValley Forge National Award for Outstanding Patriotism,Responsible Citizenship and Community Involvementand the Fellowship of Christian Athletes President andMrs. George H. W. Bush Community Impact Award. InJune 2005, Rice University announced that the newestbuilding on the campus, the 167,000-square-foot homeof the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management,had been offi cially named Janice and Robert McNairHall by the Rice board of trustees. In January 2006, theMcNairs were the recipients of the Texas Association ofPartners in Education Award for the Texas OutstandingSports Partnership. In October 2007, the Baylor Collegeof Medicine bestowed its fi rst Pink Ribbon Hero Awardfor Ambassadorship on the McNairs for their support ofpast Pink Ribbon Houses and for their <strong>com</strong>mitment tothe fi ght against cancer. In April 2009, the McNairs werehonored at the annual KIPP Academy dinner as devotedsupporters of education for inner city and underprivilegedyouth. In May 2009, McNair was named Entrepreneur ofthe Decade by the Houston Technology Center. In November2009, McNair was awarded the James A. BakerIII Prize for Excellence in Leadership, which recognizesnationally and internationally renowned leaders for theirexcellence in public service and civic life. In December2009, McNair received the inaugural Rotary LombardiHumanitarian Award. In February 2010, Janice and BobMcNair received the Encore for Excellence Award fromthe High School for the Visual and Performing Arts fortheir support of the fi ne arts in the Houston IndependentSchool District. In April 2010, the McNairs received theKezia DePelchin Award for their support of the DePelchinChildren’s Center and long history of philanthropic effortsin the Houston area. In May 2010, McNair was inductedinto the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. McNair alsois a founder of the Cotswold project, a revitalization projectfocused on downtown Houston. The Association ofFundraising Professionals honored the McNairs at theirNational Philanthropy Day Luncheon on Nov. 3, 2010,with their Maurice Hirsch Award for Philanthropy, thehighest recognition given to honor an individual or familyfor their exceptional generosity and outstanding civic andcharitable responsibility. The McNairs were selected tobe featured as Houston Treasures in “The Social Book –2011,” a Houston publication. McNair was honored by theJunior Achievement of Southeast Texas as a member ofthe Class of 2011 Laureates, JA Hall of Achievement, inApril 2011. Texas Children’s Cancer Center honored theMcNairs as the 2011 Community Champions in September2011. The McNairs were honored to serve as headlinersof the Escape Family Resource Center’s annualCelebrity Serve Benefi t in April <strong>2012</strong>.McNair is a current or past member of the boards oftrustees of a number of institutions, including Rice University;Baylor College of Medicine; the Texas Heart Institute;Houston Grand Opera; the Museum of Fine Arts,Houston; the Greater Houston Partnership; the GreaterHouston Convention and Visitors Bureau; the Free EnterpriseInstitute; the Sigma Chi Foundation; the FederalReserve Banks of Dallas and Houston; and the WorldPresidents’ Organization.Born in Tampa, Fla., McNair and his wife, Janice SuberMcNair, have been residents of Houston since 1960. Mr.McNair graduated from the University of South Carolinain Columbia in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science degree,and Mrs. McNair is a 1959 graduate of Columbia Collegein Columbia, S.C. In 1999, Mr. McNair received an honoraryDoctor of Humane Letters degree from the Universityof South Carolina.
