GAME 14: Carolina 28, Houston 1371,540 • Reliant Stadium • Houston, Texas • Dec. 18, 2011GAME SUMMARYThe Texans trailed the Carolina Panthers 21-0 athalftime and responded with 13 unanswered pointsbut were done in by turnovers and defensive lapsesin a 28-13 loss that snapped a seven-game winningstreak.The Texans outgained the Panthers 358-318 buthad three turnovers, including two interceptions byrookie QB T.J. Yates. It was the fi rst time all seasonthat the Texans did not force a turnover.The Panthers’ three scoring drives in the fi rst halfaveraged 45 yards. Each came after a miscue bythe Texans that gave rookie QB Cam Newton andthe Panthers a short fi eld.RB Arian Foster lost a fumble on the second playof the game. The Panthers recovered at the Houston26-yard line and scored four plays later on a26-yard touchdown pass from Newton to WR SteveSmith.Neil Rackers missed a 49-yard fi eld goal late inthe fi rst quarter, and the Panthers turned it into a9-yard touchdown catch by TE Jeremy Shockey.Panthers TE Richie Brockel ran in for a 7-yardtouchdown in the fi nal minute of the second quarteron a “fumblerooski” misdirection play on secondand-goal.The score was set up by an interceptionof Yates by LB Jordan Senn, who returned the ballpast midfi eld.Houston’s defense limited the Panthers to 18yards and one fi rst down in the third quarter, butthe Texans could muster only two fi eld goals on twotrips to the red zone.The Texans fi nally got in the end zone two minutesinto the fourth quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run byFoster. Newton led thePanthers 80 yards in seven plays on the followingdrive, taking a 28-13 lead on a 24-yard touchdownrun by DeAngelo Williams with 9:59 remaining.The Texans drove inside the Panthers’ 10-yard lineon the ensuing drive, but Yates was picked off onthird-and-goal from the nine to end Houston’s fi nalscoring threat.Foster fi nished with 109 rushing yards on 16 carriesand 58 receiving yards. Yates was 19-of-30for 212 yards. RookieQB T.J. Yates attempted 16 passes but was sackedfour times, including twice by DE Robert Mathis.Orlovsky was 23-off-41 for 233 yards and a touchdown.He <strong>com</strong>pleted passes of 11, 10 and 34 yardson the fi nal drive to move the Colts to the 20-yardline with 46 seconds left. That was followed by backto-backpenalties on rookie DE J.J.
