Install PostgreSQL package:apt-get install postgresql To remove a specific package:apt-get remove --purge When an internet connection not is available, deb packages can be installed with the followingcommand: dpkg –i .debo Gentoo (emerge)o Suse (yast or yast2)• Continue with paragraph 5.1.2.3.5.1.2.3 General installationInstructions:• PostgreSQL is installed in the system default directory structure. Use the locate pg_ctl or find /-iname pg_ctl command to determine the PostgreSQL bin directory (referenced hereafter asPGBIN). The PostgreSQL data directory (referenced as PGDATA) will usually be located in a directorynamed /var/lib/postgres/data, /var/lib/pgsql/data or /usr/local/pgsql/data.• Execute the set or export command; the PostgreSQL bin directory should be part of the PATHenvironment variable. If this is not the case, add the following lines to the /etc/profile file (or/etc/profile.local if it is referenced from the /etc/profile file) and adding the following lineafter previous PATH variable declarations:PATH=":$PATH"Additionally if export PATH is not allready part of the profile file, add:export PATHExecute the . /etc/profile command.If the PATH is set correctly all PostgreSQL binaries should be executable from any directory and the/ prefix will not be necessary.• Check if the postgres user has been added by executing the su - postgres command (type exitto return to the root user). If user postgres does not exist, create it with:adduser postgres• If a PostgreSQL data directory was not created automatically, it can be created manually as follows:(if the directory exists but it is empty, remove the directory and execute the following steps)o Choose a data directory. This directory will be referenced as PGDATA.o Create the directory: mkdir o Set the appropriate rights: chown postgres o Execute the following commands:su - postgres/initdb -D exit• Edit the postgresql.conf file in the PostgreSQL data directory PGDATA.For PostgreSQL 7.4 uncomment (remove the ‘#’): tcpip_socket = trueFor PostgreSQL 8.x TCP/IP connections are accepted by default.
