22 THE <strong>END</strong> IS THE BEGINNINGtook too long for an army to travel on foot. Whenfamine, or disease consumed a close neighbor’s area –others would attack them. Priests and kingsalso ruled, as religious heads, and became their saviors.This was, especially true, when they began defeatingtheir neighboring cities.As “the haves” and “the have nots” grew – more warsincreased. Slavery and death was the result for thosewho lost. Non-violent individuals usually left beforea war began. They fled to the wilderness and had tolearn to survive all over again. They felt safer in thewilderness, than in the metropolitan areas. In timethis civil order generated from groups of families,into tribes and, then, formed into nations. When TheKings and The Priests found it impossible to carry outboth religious and civil duties, they separated the twofunctions. Kings, overall, were responsible for thesafety and commerce of the nation. Religion had itsown respected hierarchy of Priests. The top religiouspriest was called Pontifex Maximus (the supreme elderor “papa” over others).When conquering other areas, they felt their leaderwas successful and worthy to be a “mini-god.” Theycalled their victorious leader – Mars (god of war). Atthe beginning of civil society, they felt the gods wouldfight with each other (as when Cain murdered Abel).Satan was known to be “street smart” as a deceiver.But, he was, also, worshipped.
