Kings, overall, were responsible for thesafety and commerce of the nation. Religion had itsown respected hierarchy of Priests. The top religiouspriest was called Pontifex Maximus (the supreme elderor “papa” over others).When conquering other areas, they felt their leaderwas successful and worthy to be a “mini-god.” Theycalled their victorious leader – Mars (god of war).
