females caught inside human habitation (113/237--0.40) is near to
that already found in Lobito (about 0.30) and Luanda (0.37), suggest-
ing that this may be an expression of some real bioecological cha-
racteristic of this form.
160 out of the 350 indoor caught females were either freshly fed
or gravid, 58 other females were unfed and the remaining 19 were
biting man (collectors or residents) at the time of the catch. All gravid
females, so, were found inside human habitation. Both males and
females could be found indoors at any time, these ones either resting
or biting, though there seems to be an evening and a morning peak (34)
for the indoor density of quinque/asciatus. The main indoor resting
sites of this form were the bed mosquito-nets (when they existed) and
*.he walls (of any material), though the ceilings (also of any kind),
clothes, the underside of beds, furniture, etc., were also often used.
The present remarks on C. p. quinque/asciatus, confirming the
close association to man of this mosquito, a true house-pest wherever
it occurs in Angola, also show the high degree of distinctiveness
between this form and piplens s. str. in that concerns behaviour and
ecological niches. Here again, as on the morphological and distributional
grounds, the available evidence is clearly in accordance with
a specific treatment of each of the two forms of the C. pipiens
complex known to occur in Angola.
7.5.20--Culex (Culex) poicilipes (Theobald, 1903)
The first records of C. poicilipes in Angola are those by Giles (2)
from Benguela (as taeniorhynchoides) and by Wellman (3) (4), from
Biff and Bailundo. Later, it was found at Capelongo, Cuchi, Luanda,
Mavinga, and Mulondo by Gfindara (10) (ll), at Caxito, Huambo and
N'Giva by Worth & Paterson (12) and at Lobito by one of us (34).
