TAXONOMIC NOTES. As much as five forms of C. annulioris were
described in addition to the : gambiensis, congolensis,
major, consimilis (this one as tigripes var.) and mayumbae (as bitaeniorhynchus
vat.). These were reduced to major and consimilis by
Edwards (8) who, lesides the differences on abdominal tergites, also
pointed out to some slight differences in phallosome. Later, Hamon &
Ovazza (47), emphasizing the examination of phallosomes, came to the
conclusion that only two subspecies were valid: C. annulioris annulioris
(the typical form) and C. annulioris consimilis.
It seems to be now quite evident, however, that the variation on
the abdeminal tergites of C. annulioris is of a continuous kind. All the
three kinds of tergal abdominal pale markings in this species (basal,
latero-apical and ground pale markings) are subjected to a marked,
largely (positively) correlated variation. They all may be either enterely
absent (congolensis form) or more or less developed. In the other extreme
of this variation, the abdomen becomes extensively pale (paler than in a.
annulioris types), with the usual triangular basal and latero-apical mark-
2g:. coalescing as the result ef the presence of many scattered pale
scales on the ground (which is then perhaps better described as being
pale with some scattered dark scales).
On the other hand, in that concerns phallosome, variation in spiculation
seems to be also continuous in kind. Moreover, sometimes this is
apparently also the case in males reared from the same breeding place,
some of these having the inner divisions of the ,
others presenting the strong spicules of the consimilis form (or even stronger
than figured by Edwards), while others are intermediate. It is also
to be noted that, sometimes, even the degree of spiculation of the inner
division differs markedly from the left to the right side of the same phallosome.
Lastly, this terminalic character is often in disagreement with the
tergal abdominal pattern not only of the corresponding males but also
of the associated females reared from the same breeding place. This was
certainly the case for the form mayumbae of Galliard (31) which phallo-
