2 -- HISTORICAL OUTLINE Culex pipiens was the first species of genus Culex to be recorded from Angola (Mog/tmedes), in 1903, by B. Roque (1). In 1905, Giles (2) recorded C. poicilipes among material sent by Dr. Yale Massey from Benguela. F. C. Wellman (3) (4) and F. C. Wellman & W. E. Fay (5), in 1905 and 1907, added C. guiarti, C. theileri, C. duttoni and C. univittat,ts to the Angolan mosquitoes in the Bifi-Bailundo area. The next new C,dex records for Angola were C. annulloris by Theobald (6), in 1910, from Catema (Bi) and, in 1914, C. invidiosus, C. decens, C. rima and C. tigripes by M. Gamble (7), from So Salvador. With the new records C. annulioris annulioris and C. pipiens pipiens, in 1914, by Edwards (8) and C. argenteopunctatus, C. horridus, C. nebulosus, C. pipiens quinque[asciatus and C. thalassius, in 1952, by A. T. F. Colato (9), 15 Culex species and subspecies became known from Angola. In 1956, our knowledge on the Angolan mosquitoes was definitely improved with the revision carried out by A. F. G/tndara (0) (1) who added, besides much new distributional data, 12 new Culex records to the previous list: C. annulioris consimilis, C. antennatus, C. argenteopunctatus kingi, C. cinerellus, C. cinereus, C. grahami, C. inconspicuosus, C. rubinotus, C. simpsoni, C. telesilla, C. watti and C. :ombaensis. In 1961, C. B. Worth & H. E. Paterson (12) added C. ingrami, C. insignis, C. invidiosus vexillatus, C. ornatothoracis, C. tri[ilatus and C. tri[oliatus to the previous list of Angolan species and subspecies, extending also considerably our knowledge on their geographical distribution. In 1966, one of us (3) recorded C. bitaeniorhynchux, C. tritaeniorhynchus and C. univittatus neavei as Estud., Ens. e Doc.- 134 19
