7 -- SYSTEMATIC ACCOUNT
Genus Culex L. is a cosmopolitan one, comprising near 600 described
species and subspecies, about 150 of which occur in the Ethiopian
Region.
After the recent revisions by Sirivanakarn (29) (30), the Ethiopian
species are thought to belong to seven subgenera: Lutzia Theo., Lasiosiphon
Kirkpatrick, Barraudius Edws., Eumelanomyia Edws., Maillotia
Theo, Culiciomyia Theo, and Culex L. Of these subgenera, Lasiosiphon
and Barraudius are represented only by one and two species, respectively,
confined to the northernmost part of the Ethiopian Region (Sudanese
Arid biotic zone of Moreau). All the remainder five subgenera are widely
distributed in Angola as well as in all the Africa South of Sahara.
Basic descriptions of the Angolan Culex are to be found mainly in
F. V. Theobald (6), F. W. Edwards (8), G. H. E. Hopkins (24), Galliard (31),
De Meillon & Lavoipierre (23), De Meillon et al. (28), De Meillon (33)
and Brunhes et al. (14), though other taxonomic contributions will be
cited under the corresponding taxa.
7.1--Subgenus I_,utzia Theobald, 190'3
This subgenus with strong, predacious larvae is represented in Angola,
as well as in all the Ethiopian Region, by a single generalized species.

The first published record of C. tigripes from Angola was that of M.
