ministers and rabbis, chaplains, and at least
one Greek Orthodox priest, all yacking away,
even as you and I.

There have always been many hams in the
military. Since communications are a vital
link in the successful maintenance of a proper
military establishment, it would be difficult
to envision a situation in which there
were no reasonably close relationship between
the Defense Department and Amateur
Radio. In times of crisis, we are expected to
furnish a pool of experienced communications
personnel, upon which the military can
depend. This calls for some degree of liaison.

The history of Amateur Radio, indeed,
that of electronics in general, is star-studded
with many great names, each of which would
be entitled to an individual article; their contributions
have been so significant. Men like
DeForest, Colpitts, Hartley , Meissner, Armstrong
and Hazeltine, all hams, have given the
fruits of their genius for the belterment of all
humanity. Without the work of ~hese pioneers,
many of the marvels which make life
easy today would not even exist. It is fair
to say that these men were giants.
Thanks to the devotion and dedication of
thousands of radio amateurs, the art of electronics
has contributed greatly to world peace
and friendship. Nations, once widely separated
from each other, have been enabled to
maintain lines of communication and avenues
of peaceful approach.
International aspects of ham radio may
generate further interchange, resulting in an
atmosphere of genuine amity and good will
among the nations of the world. It may
spread out to the general populations, and
finally reach up to the ruling circles. In this
way, ham radio has an opportunity to make
its greatest contribution of all. Hams everywhere
have a justifiable reason to be proud
of their hobby. There are few hobbies which
are so capable of contributing to society.
