The Republic is one of Russia's major suppliers of ores for non-ferrous
metallurgy with a special focus on extracting and preparing ores to produce
copper and zinc concentrates, as well as precious metals. The proven Yubileinoye
and Podolskoye deposits are among the richest in the Urals region.
Bashkortostan is abundant in woods. The area covered with forests and
scrubs occupies over one third of the Republic's total territory. The general stock
of timber is estimated at 766.8 million cubic meters. The following types of trees
dominate: birch tree, linden, pine, aspen, spruce, and oak.
There are over 13,000 rivers in the Republic of Bashkortostan, their total
length exceeding 57,000 kilometers, as well as more than 2,000 lakes with the
water table of the largest ones in excess of 130 square meters.
The Republic has over 430 ponds and reservoirs of which the biggest are
Pavlovskoye, Nugushskoye, Karmanovskoye, and Yumaguzinskoye. Discovered
and investigated in Bashkortostan are over 50 sources and springs of medicinal
hydrogen-sulfide, iodine-bromine, sodium-chloride, sulfate, and other mineral
waters. Bashkortostan boasts unique sources of thermal vapors and gases,
deposits of medicinal mud, a favorable climatic environment possessing powerful
curative factors, a number of famous resorts and vacation retreats: Yangan-Tau,
Krasnousolsk, Assy, Yumatovo (the nation's only koumiss medical center), Yakty-
Kul, and others whose unique nature influences are unrivalled.
Hordes of tourists are attracted by Bashkortostan's sanctuary areas featuring
picturesque natural sceneries, curative montane air, motley grass aromas, and
pure mountain rivers. All tourist facilities offer active recreation throughout
the year. Prominent in the Republic are equestrian, pedestrian, bicycle and cave
varieties of tourism as well as water activities, such as rafting, etc. Several
mountain skiing resorts are very popular with the public in the winter season.
The Republic of Bashkortostan is one the most powerful – economically and
socially – regions of Russia whose development harmoniously combines both
national and regional interests.
